Marines have to do 3 miles in 18 minutes

I took the PFT once at MCRD San Diego during the 1st week of training and ran 20 minutes 15 seconds, I can't recall how many situps and pushups. I was kicked out after 1 month of beatings and torture. The DI took the M-16 from the kid next to me swung it and broke his thigh. I turned my head and watched and the DI yelled and said "I didn't say to turn your head" then broke my jaw and when I hit the deck my skull cracked wide open. I stayed in the Naval Hospital until well then the Lt put me into Motivation Platoon. I nearly drowned five times, passing out black three times. The DI in MP choked me until I passed out three times. I was kicked out of MCRD and sent to NTC. The Navy was alot nicer to me. My Dad was shocked when I came home a swabbie instead of a jarhead.

Marines train for military service, not running competitions.

Marines train for The Marines and not the "military".

Most Military service members do not TRAIN for military service, most military service on a daily basis is just an ordinary job that you could obtain in the private sector.

Keyword here being MOST, but yes, very valid point. While what I did in the military certainly did not fall in to one of those ordinary jobs category, a very large number of military members (especially those with 10+ years TIS) train specifically to pass their PT run test because their every day job requires a lot of sitting around doing paper work/logistics stuff. I used to think most people in the military were super fit. That's most certainly not the case.

The four regular U.S. Pentagon branches are the best in the world. Who would not be proud to wear the uniform of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, or U.S. Air Force? I would. The Marines are the fifth branch of the U.S. Pentagon, mandated by Congress in 1775 as America's elite fighting force. The Marines are mandated by Congress to accomplish the most difficult and challenging missions as ordered by the President of the United States, and to carry out deployments and training with special professionalism not expected from ordinary men.

As to the rest, the brainwashed jarhead talk in threads about Marines is always good for a laugh. As Harry Truman said, the Marines have a propaganda machine that is almost equal to Stalin's.

I APPLAUD the marines for NOT screwing around running a 5k when most americans don't even know how far that is. Our state has been running 5k for cross country 22 years and they still give splits at the 1 MILE and 2 MILE. How ignorant is that? If you can figure out how far 5k is, you can surely figure out where the 1k, 2k, 3k, and 4k splits should be.

Each individual United States Marine is painfully and arduously forged into physical hand-to-hand / weaponsless fighters, in addition to being experts at killing with knives, guns, mortars, helos, tanks, artillery, and airplanes. Running and calisthenics are an important part of fitness preparation as well.

when i was in combat i did situps exactly the same number of times that i did dead hang pullups and ran 3 miles in running shoes. zero.

the PFT is a measure of physical fitness, not combat strength. the COMBAT fitness test barely accomplishes that.

way back in the day, my max PFT was 290. I maxed the run & the situps, but could only do 18 pull-ups - even though I benched well over 250lbs at 5'11, 175.

What used to tick me off back then is you were allowed to 'kip' the pull-ups so that it was basically an exercise in momentum & coordination - not a measure of upper body strength.

We had guys with pencil thin arms who kipped 30 pull-ups. I refused to learn how to kip. I think the USMC may have eventually disallowed kipping..

Gaining 30lbs of muscle isn't what you need. You might need to gain 5lbs of upper body mass for the pull ups even that is a stretch. You just need to do these exercises to develop some local muscle endurance. It is a crappy test and not very specific. Carrying a 200lb guy 400ms is a heck of a lot more important than the ability to run in sneakers 3 miles.

You stand a better chance of survival by walking in front of a speeding freight train than joining the Marines. You have to be an total idiot to join the Marines knowing full well the high percentage of Marines crippled by repeated sadistic training rituals.
