It depends on the state, and the situation in which you are caught, but being caught with a fake ID that can be traced to you is a FELONY. The same applies to letting your underage friend borrow your ID for the night. When applying for jobs a felony does not look good.
After court fees, and fines my older brother was in the hole almost two thousand dollars when he was caught with his fake by a cop.

However, if you are USING it as a government issued ID, then the result is the same....you are providing false information on a government, albeit fake, form.

An "authority" on fake IDs is on letsrun, and heed his words, if you use a fake id, you will be caught and THROWN IN PRISON! Just like the 23 million college students who used fakes, got caught, and are rotting in jail right now.
