Granted- he did a great job at Dartmouth- but no way in hell is the next Dartmouth coach coming from a school like CW Post!

Good? The guy finished third in the 64 Olympic 5,000, beating Michel Jazy, Kip Keino and Ron Freaking Clarke. The U.S. didn't win a medal on the track above 1,500 for another 20 years. He is easily one of the most underrated runners in U.S. history. As a coach all he did was coach 20 sub-4 milers at Oregon (plus Byers), four American record-holders. At one point in 1982 the top three 5,000 guys in U.S. history were coached by him. And his 1978 and 1979 cross country teams (second to UTEP both years) are the greatest North American college distance crews EVER! That includes the Duck team that won last fall. Vin's Stanford teams aren't even in the same solar system. Four of the six on the 78 team made Olympic teams--Salazar, McChesney, Clary, Boileau. The other two--Chapa and MArtin--were also pretty "good."
This was more recruiting than coaching. And several of these runners did their best after they left Dellinger, or had other coaches while Dellinger coached them.
For all the runners who did well under Dellinger, he ignored 5 more that Bowerman would have paid attention to.
Dellinger in his own words has acknowledged that he wasn't that smart, and that Bowerman was the genius.
And, as has been pointed out on these boards many times...assess Dellinger's career not over the flood of talent he inherited from Bowerman, or was attracted to Oregon due to Pre, but rather all the decades of his career.
He really did not do that much after the Oregon buzz died down with the departures of Bowerman, and then Pre, and then those attracted to the school by Bowerman and Pre.
Without the fluke of J. Cruz landing in his lap with his own coach... Dellinger never wins an outdoor title.
I love my Ducks, I am just not into unrealistic myths. Dellinger had an explainable period of success, and then not much after that. Bowerman had a career of success.

Not very likely as 1500's were only run during Olympic years at the NCAA and national AAU level and he was not of that caliber. He was also not a 4:09 high school runner.
He was a middle of the pack runner who had Roy Chernock and then Al Dawson as his mentors...

Post had a good program at the time. It was a perfectly normal step up.
