Rupp to redshirt outdoors

Reasons why Rupp will redshirt the 2009 Outdoor Season:

1. He is a smart kid, graduated early with a 3.91 GPA, and could go right into grad school at Oregon (School of Sports Marketing?).

2. Keara is still in school at Oregon.

3. Eugene is hosting 2010 Nationals.

4. German won't be able to duck him next year.

5. Oregon will be strong at NCAA Outdoors without Rupp this year. They will have more need for his points in 2010 after their great Javelin throwers have graduated.

For those who read the message board on letsrun.com, a thread has recently popped up claiming that Rupp will redshirt at Oregon this spring. Any athlete who skipped a season to train for the Olympics gets a free pass, so in theory, he would have that option.

However, both UO director of track and field Vin Lananna and UO associate director of track and field Dan Steele said there were no plans for Rupp to redshirt this season.

“We have no plans to redshirt Galen Rupp,” Lananna said. “He will open up either at the UCLA dual meet or the following week at the Oregon Relays.”

The question has been answered.

Rupp is not redshirting.

Wait and see...if he is running at PAC10s, I will believe it he is not redshirting.

From my understanding, they are awaiting the activities waiver, until that question is answered by the NCAA, they "have no plans to redshirt."

Rupp looks like he could go sub-13:08, sub-27:20 this season. Even Wejo/Rojo thought he was in AR 10k shape at the Olympics and XC, and they constantly underestimate or insult him. (They hyped German as having an individual medal chance at World Jr. XC too good to pass up, injury or not, and then afterwards do a complete reversal and say that Rupp couldn't have done it!)

The only good reason I see for redshirting is to increase his odds of winning USAs versus Abdi and then being in contention for bronze at Worlds.

Trying for sub-13:08 CR or sub-13:15 ACR and/or 10k AR, 5k and/or 10k NCAAs, and then USAs and Worlds, leaves him vulnerable at every point like in 2007.

All of the criticism of Rupp is very interesting...

Some people proclaim that he should go pro, because his ability, "benefits," and some times his focus (such as going to the Olympics) does not appear to be that of an NCAA runner...

But then he doesn't run at an international competition (Worlds XC), preferring to focus on NCAA indoors, and other people criticize him for ducking "the big boys."

Talk about a catch-22... but then again, I would love to be at the receiving end of that criticism

there is absolutely no way rupp is going to stay in college another year

he could get a terrible season-ending injury and he would still just rehab as a pro. as much as i\'m sure he cares about the oregon team, it just makes no sense to sacrifice a year\'s pay and continue to take classes he doesn\'t need

A World XC title is more prestigious overall on the world running stage, as the competition is hardest. If Rupp runs World XC next year, it's all good.

I'm hoping to see him go for a 5K pr at Cardinal. His best chance for 10k record would be a European race.

Not really a catch 22... he eats, sleeps and lives like a pro and races collegiates.

If was like any other college runner he wouldn't get the criticism that he gets and if he were to go pro he wouldn't get it either instead he is stuck in the middle.

Then again he doesn't really duck competition though... Payton Jordan, Boston Indoor, Tyson Invite are all primarily Pro races. Not to mention Olympic Games and World Championships.

Why would he run World XC next year and get trashed?

It's much easier to win an indoor championship against kids who are just out of high school.

excellent point, and I might add that running world cross and finishing somewhere bewteen 5th and 15th doesn't get your university an NCAA title or earn you an NCAA title. so while the world xc championship will be there every year for the next 8-15 years of Rupp's career, NCAA's and the true team competition that it presents will not. but I'm sure that is what you meant to say.

personally I don't know why Rupp even competed at the state meet in high school, he should have just been focussing on "the biggest meet in the world" and "mixing it up with the best runners in the world" for the last 8 years, since he'll never have another chance to do so.

i mean I don't understand why an american born collegiate runner would want to re-write the collegiate record books and to make matters worse, help his team rewrite the record books. doesn't he realize that he's just missed the world championships in cross country and he'll never have a chance to run that event again? i mean unlike the olympics (yeah true he did already go to the olympics), which come around every 4 years and have every runner in any kind of shape aiming for them, the world cross country championships are only offered every....year.

world xc has actually been downsized to every-other-year due to sponsorship problems

Since he has talent, motivation and total support from Nike maybe he should stop playing around in College...

and perhaps a good race or two in europe since he's getting a later start to the outdoor season.

yes, compared to most college runners (which is what he is) he sure makes a point of avoiding the "real races" and the "real pro runners".
