True enough! But 'Minnesota during the summer' is still only a four week period that anyone can suffer through!!

I am a yankee transplant who has been living in the south for several years and I can't believe how ignorant New Englanders are towards everything that exists outside of their beloved Northeast. With that being said, both regions have smart people, and both have dumb people. If you are smart and educated with good intentions you will make it in both regions and find similar people to socialize with. The north however still prides themselves with not being racist like people in the south to make themselves feel more "progressive". While growing up in Boston however I will say I have never encountered more racism in my life.

I like the PETA vs. Street Preachers idea. I'd pay to see it, but, then, I'm a boxing fan to begin with. Couldn't agree more about the self-righteous of any stripe; I don't need to be told how to live, though I should point out that there's a difference between simply being a self-righteous prick and interfering with individual liberties that are enshrined, or at least implied, in law. Last, I live in Southeastern PA and have spent a lot of time working and playing in Philly, DC, NY, Wilmington, and Baltimore--all big, rough, old line Northeastern/Midatlantic cities. I don't think it's acceptable, let alone common, to yell at people for perceived wrongs in any of these places, though there will always be outliers. An exception is the occasional permitted political protest (I see these now and then in Philadelphia), but, again, there's a difference between organized political speech--however ineffective--and unrestrained verbal aggression.

In 1861, Texas, against the wishes of Governor Sam Houston, joined the Confederacy to fight in the Civil War...this is what Houston said:

..."After millions of treasure and thousands of lives you may win Southern independence, but I doubt it...the North is determined to preserve this Union...they are not a fiery, impulsive people like you because they live in cold climates..they move slow, but once they do move they will move with a force which cannot be matched in power and will hit like a mighty avalanche"

Since I noticed you replied to me, I am not from Massachusetts (MA), I am from Minnesota (MN). If you weren't replying to me, my bad.

And for the person that said the bugs are bad in MN, you're absolutely right. The mosquitoes are absolutely horrible here from early June till late August.

i judge being northern certain geographic and cultural connections...

pretty much new england and dunkin donuts, and all of metro newyork by popular demand.

ohio...? im at a loss for any interesting identificating characteristics.

I am from the south and ran track and XC for a major southern university and my roommate/teammate and I were out for a long run one Sunday morning and we came across a couple of young ladies who had a flat tire on their car and seems unable to get it fixed themselves. Well, being the southern gentlemen we are we stopped and offered to help them. We noticed as we were getting the jack from the trunk that they had a New York license plate. As we changed their flat tire for them we made small talk and they told us they were down visiting a friend and were headed back home when they ran over something that cut down their tire. When we got done they thanked us and asked us how they could repay us. My roommate looked at them and said "not a problem ladies, its more than enough thanks for us to help two yankees go home".

I'll always remember the look on those two fat cows' faces as long as I live.

It's not worth arguing over, but I can assure you that native Mississippians definitely do not refer to soft drinks as "pop".

By the way, for what it's worth, I sometimes feel bad when I remember how the boys in my class treated the the transplanted northerners when I was growing up. It was mostly because of the difference in accent. To us the southern accent was normal and the northern, or nonsouthern, accent sounded effiminate to us. therefore we grew up with the impression that boys from the north were sissies. If any of the northern posters here have been victims of this kind of discrimination, I apologize.

Ohio-Great Lakes State, rust belt, and lots of agriculture.

Lots of mid-size cities with high crime rates (Toledo, Cleveland, Youngstown, Lima, Akron,etc)

Western and Central Ohio largely farmland. Southern and Eastern Ohio is catagorized as being part of Appalachia. Think West Virginia and Kentucky. Lots of hills and poor white people.

Columbus seems to have taken over as the predominant growing city in Ohio.

If you look at a map of the presidential elections its always the same-Democratic in all the cities (except Cincinnati) Republican every where else (Smaller towns and rural areas).

It would be impossible to describe that state by on distinctive identifying quality.

And they say "pop" everywhere in Ohio.

You have just given credence to the earlier statement that "southern hospitality" is not genuine.

Yeah like the mass shootings in alabama and germany in the same day. If I'm going to get shot anyway, I would prefer people hold off on the fake southern hospitality. At least with a seething person or someone dressed in gothic black I know what's up and can stay far away.

I believe catv was trying to say that different regions of the US used to have somewhat different cultures, similar to how Eurpoeans seem to have different cultures depending on where they come from. Modern forms of rapid communication and mass entertainment have, to a great extent, homogenized the country.

I'm simply...at a loss.

He reminds me of Franklin Sanchez, but he is a bit faster. I wonder if his career will last longer; I hope so.
