I wasn't necessarily talking about running; I meant people's endeavors in general, whatever they may be: running, lifting, painting, music, medicine, mathematics, family... whatever.
My point was that some people sell themselves short by making excuses to not fully apply themselves in the non-trivial aspects of life (e.g. things that will improve them in some way - physically, mentally, emotionally, whatever...). That is what I think is sad (the making excuses). But hey, what can you do... people can do what they want.
It's not really people giving less than their best that bothers me (you can spend all day on the couch for all I care and I won't think less of you; you decide what's important in your own life), it's people giving less than their best and then complaining that they're not doing well enough in whatever field.
