No one uses a 17 second conversion, it is more of a 4:05-4:06.

good to see haverford guys running together in that 10k, NYU's xc champ team putting up impressive times again after what i thought was just a decent indoor. and i think already there's faster times than all of last year in that event. id guess some of teh cortlandt runners will move up to that and they arent 2 worried about the 5k in early april.
I think catherine beck will/should stick with the 1500 and go for the win! she has good speed and it's a good double with the 5k and shes strong in that 2. i havent seen any results from wizsowatty in a while and hopefilly she gets back for her senior season.
why wouldnt you use a 17 second conversion??
This runner is terrific shape and coming down the home stretch kicking is he really going to only be running almost 20 seconds for the last 100m....I think not!
A 17 second conversion may be too fast but to me seems more reasonable since it is a kick.
it's not the last 109 m that we are adding, it is 109m in the middle. Or are you saying he did not kick at all? Or he could sustain his kick for 309m instead of 200m? Do you just double your 800 time to get your 1600 time? You also have to consider a slowdown factor. 18-19 seconds is more appropriate.

Any news on Zerzan? If healthy, she's my pick for the 10k/5k.
why dont we just count the extra 109m at the beginning
That would still be slower than 17 seconds. There has to be a factor of fatigue taken into account, even if it is "just" 109 meters. A conversion of about 18.2 seconds is more appropriate.
3:47 high is a fantastic time. Doesn't matter if it converts to 4:04, 4:05, or 4:06. Fantastic race, for a guy who doesn't run a lot of hard 1500s. After getting AA in XC and running this top-tier 1500 time, Jimmy O may be more of a distance guy than he'd care to admit.
That being said, Kosgei is the hands-down favorite in anything he runs.
Not if he's racing Tyler Sigl.
Not if he's racing Tyler Sigl.
Kosgei is good, no doubt about it. And he is the most talented athlete in track. I saw that because of his PR's from the 800 through Cross Country, as well as his ability to run well on his own and in the big meets when it counts.
But, with all the talk he is getting, people seem to be forgetting about Sigl.
Sigl did beat Kosgei in Cross.
Yeah, Sigl didnt win the Indoor 5k, but I think D3 fans should be equally excited to see how Sigl will close his collegiate career as they are to see how Kosgei comes onto the scene.
I believe Kosgei will dominate every race he runs at Nationals, because I dont think he'll step up to the 5k or 10k.
That being said, I would love to see Sigl and Kosgei duke out again at Nationals in the 5k. Kind of like Moen and Yuot a few years back.

Where's Willy Kaul on your rader? Sigl and Kosgei duke it out.... just saying.
Willy Kaul is an awesome runner. No disrespect to him. And I am not doubting at all that he can run just as well if not better than Sigl and Kosgei, if they were to all run the 5k at Nats.
However, I would love to see Sigl and Kosgei battle it out at Nats. It seems that Kaul and Sigl have plenty of runs against eachother, being in the same conference and Regionals.
If I am right, Sigl and Kosgei have only raced eachother once - in any race - and that was at XC Nats. Have they ever raced eachother on the track?
So, just saying id like to see it. All the better to see Kaul with them.
seems like with all the talk people are forgetting about a lot of people other than Sigl as well. There are a ton of talented guys out there, like Kaul and Hany Abdulla, and Chris Erichsen, Ian Ramsey-North, maybe Jed Christensen. Don't short-change the competition- I don't think its gonna be a 2-man battle out there in either the 5k or the 10k. In 2005, Moen and Yuot were a step above the rest. This year, Sigl and Kosgei are NOT a step above the rest- there are others on the same level, and its gonna be a heck of a race for those titles.

I'm going to have to disagree there. Sigl and especially Kosgei are very much a step ahead of the rest. The others you mentioned are very good, and they all would be competitive for the win most years, but not with Sigl and Kosgei in the race. If they both run the 5k, one of them will win it.

Disagree. I think Kosgei and Sigl are a step above the rest at 5000 and 10000, and I think they have shown that to be the case during the past year. Kaul might be thrown in there also, but you have to remember that Sigl was coming off of the DMR 1600 when Kaul beat him by .01 at indoor nats. In my humble opinion, Hany, Erichsen, Ramsey-North, Christensen, etc are very good runners but not quite up there with Kosgei, Sigl, and perhaps Kaul.
100 meter dash should be up for grabs...Willie Hordge is redshirting, so he can run indoor/outdoor in 2009. With Hordge sticking around in addition to the excellent recruiting class coming in next year, Buffalo State might be the team to beat in 2009.
Last year Hany Abdallah had the top 5000 time of 14:12, ten seconds faster than Kaul, 11 than Leer, and 15 seconds faster than Sigl. If he improves at all, he'll have as good a chance for the title as anyone.
Hany will never win a D3 title. He runs good times in season but will never get it done when the pressure is on.
It's a bit absurd to put Sigl above the rest of the competition when he lost in a close battle to Kaul in the indoor 5k. Sigl and Kosgei were dominant at nationals in XC, and Sigl and Kaul put a fair gap on the competition at indoors, but things can change a fair amount between seasons. Sub-30 in the 10k by Abdallah and Ramsey-North shows they are very fit, and could be ready to take on Sigl or Kaul (or Kosgei if he runs it) in the 10k. Kaul's 30:30 at a more competitive Stanford race is pretty mediocre on the other hand, showing some vulnerability there, but also just showing how things can change between seasons (or people can just have bad races).
In a few weeks, we'll probably have a better sense of where guys are at, as people are just starting to lay down some fast times. Then we'll be able to tell better whether Sigl or Kosgei or anyone else is really above the competition (which I doubt they are).
