This is the problem with Doping. Whenever anybody does anything good anymore, the initial reaction isn't amazement, its "is this guy doping." I hope Webb isn't, but it wouldn't surprise me one way or the other.

Well, then I think a more relevant question to ask would be, "Was Webb doping in high school?", because a 3:53 in high school is far more shocking than a 1:43-high at nearly peak physical maturity.

That's just filthy. 1:43? Filthy.
lol.
I LOVE this description.
Doping without a doubt.
His hair, his size and his speed all at once improve like there was no tomorrow.
Come on guys, Grow a brain. He was talented but not this talented.
Some kind of growth hormone is not getting picked up.
Lets hope they catch him.
p.s.
A world class middle distance runner will improve when he cuts up but not bulks up.
No world class distance runner wants to add bulk to their upperbody. It will just slow then down.
"Unless the bulk is due to drugs" ie - Webb.
Then you'll run faster.
Web looks like a steriod right now.
Paint his upperbody black and call him Ben Johnson!!
you are completely full of shit. you have no evidence to say webb is on the juice or anything. it's silly to think you might actually believe what you are saying on here.
Where are links to deep US lists? T&FN is about 43 years out of date.
Here's US sub 1:44.00 times. Haven't done much work on the 800 to have a deeper US list yet.
1:42.60 Johnny Gray USA 1985
1:43.20 Mark Everett USA 1997
1:43.35 David Mack USA 1985
1:43.38 Rich Kenah USA 1997
1:43.5y Rick Wohlhuter USA 1974
1:43.62 Earl Jones USA 1986
1:43.68 Khadevis Robinson USA 2006
1:43.84 Alan Webb USA 2007
1:43.92 John Marshall USA 1984
1:43.92 James Robinson USA 1984
1:43.92 David Krummenacker USA 2002
1:43.97 José Parilla USA 1992
Good for Webb! I'm glad he put it together and got this time on paper.
It surprises me not one bit, though. He just ran a 3:46 mile! Crammy ran the same time and his PR in the 800m is 1:42. It stands to reason that Webb was going to drop a really fast 800m, and he did.
Wouldn't surprise me if he gets a 1:42 before it's all said and done.

Cool. What I want to know is how a publication calling itself "The Bible of the Sport" has performance lists 4 years out of date. Maybe they're trying to be like the actual Bible which is more like 2,000 years out of date.

Is Webb really any bigger now than he was a couple years ago? I seem to remember a picture of Webb after he won the '04 Oly Trials 1500. He looked pretty diesel back then too. But if he was on drugs, how could you account for the fact that he has had so many sub-par performances in the past couple years? People on drugs don't have as many off-days as Webb has had.

You know what else was more unlikely than the 1:43? A high school kid in the US running 3:53 for a full mile. Only a break-the-mold type is capable of that sort of effort. So, Webb would be one of the very few that I would not greet with suspicion. It would be different if he had only run 1:50 and 4:06 in high school for example. He also ran a 3:48 mile, what was it, two years ago? So why is a drop to 3:46 high and a commensurate drop in the equivalent 800 so surprising?
Think about it. Webb has dropped his mile PR from high school by almost seven seconds, but had only shaved two seconds off his 800 PR? We should be asking why he didn't break 1:44 sooner.
He is hot right now...but is the rest of the world just starting to get in shape?
I just wish he would've run this kind of stuff not right now but in four weeks. It'll be almost impossible to hold that form that long. I don't want to jinx it but I worry for him not making the finals at worlds.
XiphiasRunner wrote:Why even stick that in at the end of the post? This kid ran 3:53 while in HS. That was 4 years ago.
Actually, it was six years ago. Webb, Ritz and Hall all graduated in 2001.

Ummm, how many ARs could Pre establish in our era. Hmm, yeah, that{s what I thought...NONE. AR in our era is a hell of lot, and as far as I can tell, Pre never ran as fast as Webb in ANY event.
You are naive, to put it VERY politely! You are falling into that classic (and flawed) mentality that believes a runner is BETTER simply because he has run faster.
Try to think logically for a moment. Prefontaine competed over thirty years ago! You can't compare the times of runners from different eras, or even different generations. I will fall back to my favorite example: after Wejo himself ran a marathon PR, do you think his fans would say "Zatopek was never close to this"? No, of course not...that would be ridiculous. Zatopek won several Olympic gold medals, even if he did run slower than Wejo!
At the same time, Pre established several American Records, along with his numerous U.S. championships. Don't get me wrong, though. I'm thrilled that Webb has emerged as an amazing talent across multiple distances, but he hasn't even come close to approaching the same level of accomplishments as Prefontaine.
Sure, you conduct the blood tests...but by what your name suggests about yourself, it would probably be too scientifically complex for you to do it. In the meantime, go cry that you'll never run anywhere even close to Webb. Douche bag.
