I would just like to make this one point:
How scary is it that a 27:33 American collegiate 10k guy (who is not a senior) is not the reigning NCAA XC champion, in fact did not even win at regionals, has enough competition at 5000m by another American that he did not win the indoor 5000m nor is he favored to win the outdoor 5000m? The top miler in America (ok maybe Lagat is but you get the point) has run equally fast for 10k while making a one time diversion, winning against another young American who has been injured more than healthy.
Meanwhile another American the same age has broken the hour for the half, set a debut record for the marathon and who knows how fast he might go for the 10k when he is specifically prepared for it.
On top of that there are a number of practical unknowns running 27:xx to 28:xx in the 10k, a ton of sub 13:20 guys, some guys named Lukezic and Symmonds who have great potential for the mile, a guy named Tegenkamp who has run 13:04, and oh yeah - Dan Lincoln who broke Henry Marsh's ancient American record at the steeple, which may be in jeopardy from another guy named Famiglietti.
And lets not forget the cadre of Hansons in development including a 10:00+ HS 3200 guy named Sell who is knocking on the door of sub 2:10...
Not only that but I've yet to mention guys named Browne, Torres, Slattery, and Goucher.
And so far those are just the so-called "real Americans", the white guys.
In addition to them we have Lagat, Keflezghi, Abdirahman, Asmerom...regardless of the most biased opinions they still wear "USA" on their jersey.
Last year wasn't there a guy called Cabada?
How did we get here from where we were 5-10 years ago? Somebody write it down so the next time we suffer through the late 80's early 90's (when the top American couldn't break 28:20 at 10k) we will know what to do.
