Ask Lynn Jennings?
Will Millrose be on TV this year...anyone know??
yes, per usual, it's live on espn2. from what i understand, the entire indoor visa series will again be on espn.
First, I understand she is a convicted cheat so I'm not attempting to re-try the case.
However .....
Slaney only failed a t/e ratio. So did Gareth Turnbull and cyclist Santiago Botero (his was 24 to 1). Today however, the t/e ratio is consider crap. Turnbull and Botero were re-instated for this reason.. Slaney was not because we still thought this test was full-proof in the late 1990s.
When Slaney was failed her test in 1996, the IRMS/CIR test did not exist. This test for synthetic T, not a high ratio.
What I'm saying is Slaney would not have been convicted using a 2007 standard. Today the t/e ratio is used as an a-sample screen. It is the IRMS/CIR on the b-sample that will convict or clear an athlete.

Does this matter in anyone's thinking?
Poos, for this ... Slaney's case lead to Don Caitlin developing the IRMS/CIR test at the UCLA Lab
Doubts on Testosterone Test
Published: June 17, 1997
The New York Times
Testosterone, the male hormone that led to the suspensions of the track stars MARY SLANEY and SANDRA FARMER-PATRICK, should be dropped from the list of banned drugs unless a foolproof test can be developed, the head of the United States Olympic Committee said yesterday.
DICK SCHULTZ said the recent cases underscored doubts about current tests for a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Over the next two weeks, the U.S.O.C. will convene a panel of experts to try to establish ironclad tests. If no such tests can be found, Schultz said, the panel will tell the International Olympic Committee it should strike testosterone from its ban list.
the millrose games is the premier indoor event. to boycott it is not good for the sport.
at one time many US runners had the opportunity to run in seattle, portland, san francisco, 2 times in LA, san diego, albuquerque, okalahoma city, chigago, cleveland, louisville, richmond, baltimore, philadelphia, 2 in new york, 2 times in boston. the fields usually were top quality and the stands had enough customers that promoters could bring in foreign talent and still pay US runners (not all) something for their effort. runners had the opportunity to race and gain experience. where are these meets now?
everyone needs to support the sport and realize there are people who will cheat when money is involved. i have met slaney, can't say i like her or not, won't give you my opinion on whether i believe she used drugs or not. she was a crazy natural talent, she worked as hard as her body would let her and she wasn't a positive test until the end of her career. her performances in the Garden merit honor.
sometimes we need to look at the big picture instead of throwing dirt on people. they have to live with their decisions, their choices. that can not be easy for some people, others have no conscience. that is the way it is.
don't like drug cheats, some of the sports agents, coaches, race or meet promoters or certain personalities, your choice BUT all of us can respect and support our beautiful sport. if we don't, who will?
It is easy to trow rocks on Mary now. And how people are ungratfull, and forgetfull. Mary was one of the best athletes who represent the USA in so many National and International Competitions. At the end or her carrear she was training with Alberto Salazar and Bill Dellinger, which I trully believe are very honest and clean coaches. a
And she was caught on a test which disgraced all her great achievements. I have been coaching great athletes to Olyimpic and World Champ, medals. And I never had a so dedicated and full of motivativated person as Mary. She ran with me 8.23/1.56/4.16, and I can say, that she was very clean at those days. Mary had been tested many times over in the US and in Europe during those years. Mary at young age ran great times. And nobody could say she was doing drugs. She was a legitimate runner. She has given lots of great performances for the Millrose Games. It was a shame what happened to her. I believe that Mary is the one who suffered more than any other person when she was tested positive. Mary was a warrior and please do not forget that there are many other person to be blamed on such case. I am totally against drugs in the sport. But there are peolpe who had been and have been honored for so many things in Athletics and they were suspected to be on drugs. There are coaches who have been or had been considered the greatest, and they have or had been using lots of extras things on their athletes. And they have been offered the best jobs and the best shoes contracts all ofer the world. While many great coaches are struggling to get their job done because they are clean coaches. So, if we want to clean the sport, se must start with the sponsors who pay lots of money for the dirties. Please! Don't spend your time trying to spit on Mary's face! And peolple saying that they don't know who Mary was. It can be very funny. It proves that they do not know much about Track and Field.
Sincerely!
Luiz de Oliveira
Luis, not even people who work with Alberto at Nike would call him honest. As for Mary, you should know better, she was not a nice person.
Boycott the Dinner, snub the little Decker Attend Millrose and cheer for the clean athletes, it's simple.
These dinners are just an excuse for corporate big wigs to stay over in NYC with their administrative assistants who all seem to be named Tiffany or to have Miss Fifi- Queen of the "Theraputic" Hotel Massage perform an adjustment in the quiet of the corporate supplied suite.
Ms Slaney is but a bit player in this Thank You Howard Schmertz dinner-(baby/bathwater comment here)
If drug cheats offend you so much avoid contact with them-go to the meet and enjoy a rare night of Track& Field in MSG
and if you pass one in the lobby by all means take another escalator.
Let's put things in perspective:
Mary ran one of the most remarkable, gusty races ever in the history of Madison Square Garden. Her first 440 was faster then the men's first 440 in the Wanamker Mile a half hour earlier. From that point on, all 15,000+ in attendence were on their feet screaming. It was one of the greatest athletic exhibitions I have ever seen. Mary was tested before Millrose and soon after. The results = negative.
It's too bad that in an attempt to find the fountain of youth she may have strayed to the dark side...she wasn't along.
She is a Millrose Hall of Fame member because of that memorable race over 26 years ago and others then thrilled the NY Crowd (beating the Rusian whe she was only 15).
For many on this thread, one maybe day you might approach the greatness of Mary.
Just think, this year at Millrose will be most of the greatest living Millrose legends of all time + Yelena and her pole! I'm sure those wanting to stay away will be happy they did.

No testing before or after Millrose.
She's the right color. End of story.
The test that Mary Slaney got "busted" for isn't used anymore because it was proven not accurate and had too many false positives. Give her a break and get a life. How does this even affect you? Let her be.
IT sure is still used.
Slaney was a cheat, a freak, and a bitch. Why honor her?

Mary Slaney to be honored? Can anyone possibly take our sport seriously now?
Let the sponsors know what you think.
adidas
VISA
Hershey's
NY Daily News (I'll be the NYPost will have a field day with this one)
smartwater
New York Road Runners Club
USA Track and Field
New York City Sports Commission
are you saying the baseball, football, and basketball are not taken seriously? you can't honestly think that fans know about the drugs in those sports.
sponsors?????oh and they didn't lie cheat and steal to get where they are?
How old was Mary Decker when she made her first Olympic team? How many teams did she make in all?
Baseball this week refused to honor Mark McGuire in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Track and Field's Hall of Fame disgracefully put Slaney in, and now the Millrose Games is going to honor that convicted cheat at the Millrose Games. No wonder our sport has such a terrible reputation.

How did you come to your conclusion that the 'convictors' are more right than the athletes? The 'fact' that Mary is a convicted drug cheat only means that she was subjected to questionable testing methodologies, a convoluted process and imprecise science. To the uninitiated (which is 99% of us that post here) the drug testing process has as high a probability that the conviction came from a flawed process as it has of catching a cheat. So, judging by the strength of your conviction you are one of the initiated, in essence you have to be an insider that knows the detailed science behind the tests. Because if you are not then you are using the same thing that I am when I say that I don't put much weight in Mary's conviction: intuition. The only difference between you and me is that I realize that I could be wrong. Intuition in and of itself is no basis for your fervent position.
We've all got stories of crooked athletes who took drugs to gain money, fame, power but has there ever, once, been a convictor who was in it for anything more than the good of the sport? Has there ever been a convictor who could be in it for money, fame, power? This isn't a one sided issue, clean vs the unclean. It is the convictors vs the convicts. The convicts are clearly susceptible to cheating. Are the convictors? Clearly they have a conflict of interest equal to or greater than the athletes. Develop a drug - sell it to athletes, develop a test - sell it to the WADA. It doesn't matter if the test has been proven to be shoddy at best, sell it anyway, get your name known as the only person who really cares about the sport. Get appointed to the IOC. Develop a cult of personality, become president of the IOC, etc., etc. Win the trust of people like you who will side with you because this is a fight of good vs evil and you want to align yourself with good...yeah right.
