I dont know about their coaching ability but the Emporia GA's seem to be well connected if two of them got head coaching jobs out of grad school.

The 1988 USATF men's 10,000-meter list showed Vigil's dominance as a coach (all guys in top ten).
1. Pat Porter 27:46
2. Rick Robirds 28:22
Sam Montoya 28:34
Dave Cuadrado 28:35
All coached by Vigil, all ran for Adams State.
Try this filter:
year 1988
Ryan Shay has run 64:13 for the half. 2:14 was pretty good. According to some people's logic, the only variable to success is a good coach. Based on Ryan Shay's talent, he has run about what he should. No single coach could have squeezed any more out of Ryan than Vigil. As most people know, there are many variables. Coach Vigil has definitely done as much or more for US distance running than any one else.
It helps being a GA at a school(Emporia) where the head coach was President of the US Track Coaches Association. I would say thats a damn good reference.

I think that Porter and others help prove the point. The point as I read it was crticizing Vigil as a "MARATHON COACH". To bring bring up how great he did with athletes at other distances only helps to prove the point. Vigil is a great coach that has not yet been able to figure out the marathon for elite males. No shame in that. 2:13++ is not very good considering that guys like Sell and Cabada (in his debut) have run faster.

Steve Pasche, Luther College, Iowa (DIII). Second year at the helm first conference title in 11 years, first National apperance in 17, runner-up at Regions and 6th at NCAAs. Pretty great job considering the year before he took over Luhter was 13th in their Region.
If you haven't read this already, thought you would enjoy this. Seems like a truly insightful guy.
http://www.trackshark.com/blogs/division3blog/551/Interviews:+Steve+and+Yarrow+Pasche+of+Luther.htmlCosidering both of those guys have run faster for the half, it IS good. Porter tried ONE marathon. Again, there are a lot of variables. Porter didn't want anything to do with the marathon, hence the bad performances. I'm pretty sure he got more out of Ochoa than any coach on earth. It isn't about the time relative to other people, but running to their individual potential.

Scott Williamson at Nichols St. and Mike Nelson at Saint Louis U....they are the 2 youngest D1 head coaches in the country, and guess what??...they were both Emporia State GA's!!!
These are just a few of the younger head coaches i have found.... perhaps Williamson and Nelson are great, and young, but they are not the youngest...just be right about your facts....
Lacrosse guy at Bucknell
Tennis girl at Wyoming
XC/Track girl at Wofford
YOUNGEST:Golf girl at Georgetown (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/23/AR2006042300879_pf.html
Actually there are two women head DI coaches that are not only younger but received their coaching appointments at the age of 24....
Jerry Baltes. He is still in his first coaching job, which is a D2 school Grand Valley State. He has coached Mandi Zemba to 3 individual championships and a 15:48 5k and a USATF Nationals Qualifier. Laura Aderman to a 2nd Place finish in 06 cross. Steph Kuhlman to a 2:05 800, national championship, and a USATF national qualifier.
Girls Cross: 03-3rd, 04-4th, 05-2nd, 06-3rd
Guys Cross: 05-6th, 05-4th, 06-5th
Greg Macmillan's name even considered here is the most laughable piece I've read on this thread.
Brett Harvey at Loyola College is Head Track Coach, he is also only 24 years old.
Nelson was named the head coach at SLU at 24 years old and Williamson at 26...both have been at their schools for 2 years...still pretty remarkable since they came from the same coaching staff at emporia.
why do you say Quintana? ASU has been solid but..... was that Q's doing or the leftovers of DRENTH???
I nominate the coach at Plattsburgh State, he has had 8 All-American's in 4 season (XC, ITF, OTF, XC) 2 different females place 4th in two consecutive years. Taken the womens team from a possible 20th place finish in the region to 29th (4th in the region) in the nation. Many girls and guys running minutes faster than before he got there. Not to mention the emergence of Matt DeShane at the next level. 8 All-Americans at the age of 24, and he returns all of his women and all but two men next year. Rumor has it, it is a very good recruiting year as well.
bumpin
All I hear is a lot of hot air. The emporia GA's have done nothing, will continue to do nothing but will brag about 'til the cows come home, since that is all there is to play with in Emporia. They sound like a bunch of whiners who expect everything to be handed to them since they attended a rinkydink school in the hellhole that is known as Kansas.

Louie has in many cases coached "Drenth's Kids" to greater heights than they achieved under Drenth. NOt taking anything away from Drenth but Louie has replicated results with his own kids (sometimes with less talent) Give Drenth AND louie their due.
DAMN Reality Stinks!!! Calling out a couple of guys who got Head Jobs right out of Grad School. They must have something to offer. By the way what was your first coaching Job? Or are you even a coach???????
