never the less, Malmo, you were in the top 15 in both races, and beat alot of big names. Very commendable. Did you run with the top 5 and fade back or did you come on strong to get 12th? What did you think of that hilly course in Philly with the narrow passages at many points. I wore flats due to the pavement we had to cross at various times. It was an exciting year, bicenntenial, Montreal Olympics and all. (most likely why Philly got the meet). Hard to believe it was 30 years ago this month! geeezzz.

How many of those even made an Olympic team, let alone won a couple of Olympic medals? Fall cross country had to have been well below Shorter's radar at that point, done only as an afterthought or to support training mates. In Shorter's prime, it was him and everyone else in Boulder. The more audacious among them might have politely prostrated and requested to tote his jock.

Frank Shorter won two Olympic medals. He is still the King of the Hill in Boulder and there are bronze statues and elegantly painted murals erected in his honor, which are prominently displayed all over town. Frank is THE man.

no one is disputing Frank's greatness; to that we all bow. All others are saying is: there were plenty of national class, if not world class runners in Boulder in the 70s and 80s besides Frank....and, btw, he won his GOLD medal while training out of Gainesville, Fla. as a member of the FTC.

Yes there were some "national-class" runners in Boulder. But they were not WORLD class runners. Thehy did not change the course of history. Frank Shorter was vastly superior to these other runners, and he was just illustrating this distinction in his quote that appeared in the NY Times article, lest you forget how amazing his accolades were compared to anyone else who trained in Boulder in that era. It was Frank's world then, everyone else was just a bit player.

BJ and i both moved to Boulder after our careers began to slow down. Neither of us were there in the 70's. I moved to boulder in 1985 and I think BJ moved there around the same time. That doesn't change the fact that there were very good runners in Boulder and Colorado when Frank moved there, though as someone pointed out, they weren't olympic medalists.

When BJ was in Boulder in 1975, I got him a job delivering soap door to door. He got a nickel a bag and made good money while runnung.

Wasn't Shorters runners store the place to meet, hang out and meet for workouts in Boulder in the 80's?
