people forget olvier ran 25:15 as a soph at heps but was banged up last yr and horneck ran around 25:20 there as a soph too and ran 3:47 last yr. Morris was 4th in the 10k on the track last yr as a soph. these guys are not a bunch of "no names" they are legit runners and proved it on friday.

I think everyone's giving them credit for running a great race. The guy you're talking about was Columbia's #130 who according to the official splits was 20th at 5k but who dropped back to 49th at the finish, a more spectacular crash was #156 from Dartmouth who went from 15th to 66th! On the other hand there were a number of runners who ran strong finishes, Col #136, 46->19, PU #201, 30->17, BU #113, 27->16. At the 5k mark Columbia were challenging but were still in 2nd place.
Those are not front runner at Heps times. Try previous sub 25 at Heps preformances before discussing. Or a sub 14:15 before trying to convert track to XC.

How does having a key guy run a strategically poor race come out as a positive for Columbia? Perhaps if he had spread out his effort a bit better, he wouldn't have faded as much and could have factored in the team scoring.
You mention the fact that the team ran below its potential as a positive, while I see it as a negative.
