MOTTRAM KILLS BEKELE!!!!!

Mottram isn't comfortable in those big races, can't get his stride out, too often it ends with a fall.

Mottram can be competitive in 3k/5k because of his top-speed is so high, he can stay relaxed at almost every pace in a 5k. Webb is the US-version of Mottram, but he's too desperate to be a miler since that 3.53 in HS.

I just can't see Alan Webb beating Alex Kipchirchir or a juiced Rachid Ramzi. It would be a waste to see Webb at 1500m in 2008 OG.

Most distance runners would say that if fit and healthy they could get to a peak in 6 weeks.

Don't read into it that Buster is always doing quality work. He won a triathlon as part of his base work the other year - big base of fitness means you're never far from top shape.

Race-wise Nic does the same with other athletes he coaches manages. He says many athletes don't know how to race or whether they're really at 100% effort. You don't learn too much or develop much hanging on the back of a bunch of Africans for GP after GP.

Crystal Palace GP in 2004/5 show Mottram can race fast times not just time trial.

It was telling what Bekele said after the race - it was hard without pacemakers. Mottram didn't have a pacemaker either...

Mottram led through 2000m so it's a bit of a stretch to say Bekele was pacing.

Just the point. Mottram knew when to wait and when to go to work. Bekele didn't.

Mottram is THE RUNNER.

Who actually thinks that Mottram is a better runner than Bekele?????? Just because he beat Bekele in one race by a few seconds when Bekele was sick doesn't mean crap! I know that Mottram is a great runner, but seriously, this was a fluke victory......just like anytime that anyone beats Bekele (except maybe when ElG did it, but at least he was one of the greatest milers of all time, if not the greatest). Look at all of the other times Mottram and Bekele have raced - he got whipped in Athens in 04, came close once in London, got destroyed in World Cross, etc.. Mottram cannot hold a candle to Bekele!!! He got lucky to have the right circumstances on the right day (for him at least, the wrong day for Bekele). Feel free to trash me and call me an idiot whenever Mottram defeats a healthy, fully-fit Bekele when both runners are on their game! KennyB is still the man!

couldn't agree more - so mottram beat him in 1 stupid race, on any given day i would give odds to bekele... he has proven himself way more than mottram... mottram has had some bad races as well

Agreed that Bekele is still "The Man". HOWEVER, this may be the FIRST time that a "Muzungu" has beaten an African distance WR holder in a major race (someone correct me if I'm wrong). It definitely puts some writing on the wall.

This is definitely good for the sport, as Geb and Tergat would attest.

Seriously some of the things onhere crack me up. Like saying that Bekele was Mottrams pacer the whole race. You guys act like drafting is a crime. I love Bekele but he let Mottram use him. Mottram ran the smarter race and won. It also seems to hurt bekele at times when his teamates aren't there. He loves to run with his team in a tactical race. I think that bites him in smaller races as well. Do I think Mottram is better than Bekele... No way. But he did run smarter than Bekele.

A few thoughts about Mottram and the group ;

Stayed and trained with them in London this summer plus went to St Moritz with them thereafter. He is by far the most talented athlete I have trainined with (having spent 6 winters in Kenya). Just an incredible range in both speed + endurance - almost all through the types of sessions (incl strength work,coordination) and distances. Never seen it in a 5k runner before. Very, very gifted but also hard working. Not a single word of complaining in the sessions. No hanging around whatsoever. Plus he is a nice guy, takes good care of the rest of the group.

The training itself is nicely build into a system. Nic Bideau is a very intelligent coach - just has a great understanding of distance running&good to discuss with. Not extremely complicated, but with lots of variation (more than I have seen other places) within the intensity scale and very specific for the distance/races ahead.

Mottram is frickin gorgeous. Mullet? No mullet? Whatever. Either way, he's absolutely beautiful!!!

What kind of weapon did he use?
