I would also speculate that distance running in Western countries needs someone of Mottram's personality much more so than one of Geb et al. There is an overwhelming belief in North America and Europe that somehow that Africans are superior, and will forever be so, regardless of what we do. Having someone like Mottram, who is very vocal about his self-confidence and how he can beat the Africans sets a good example for younger runners who might consequently be less afraid to challenge the Africans in international races. Being humble and gracious is nice, but it doesn't always inspire confidence.
I think a better example would be set if the guy would just run and win. He's definitely a great runner and could be a continuous medal threat for years to come. However, this only puts him at the level of about 20 other African guys and a step below Bekele. If he keeps putting up results with his feet then he will be the inspiration that everyone seems to want him to be. With his mouth, he's not accomplishing anything more than any of the posters here...
