In theory, probably all of them, including the winners?

Too late. You already put your foot in your mouth.

The OP Igs is very conservative and by definition thinks that what he thinks should be followed by everyone else. I say to each their own, and if a 27 or 35 year old athlete can make a go of it then who is to stop them? Especially if they are getting paid or subsidized. Plenty of people have not gotten their career on track until their late 30s or into their 40s, and some not until 50. Who is Igy or anyone to judge?
But your are judging my position. I posed a question, which is a good one. More than one of these older professionals needs to move on with life. My opinion, just as your opinion is one is free to pursue a frivolous pursuit to one’s personal detriment. Feel free to judge what point of view rings true.

Man, Millennials are in their 30s -- some of them are even the people you're telling to move on. Even your "old man yelling at kids" references are dated.

Gosh, you sure put me in my place.

For many of the older professional distance runners it is apparent they need to move on in life. Continuing to hold that same dream for even another year seems pointless to me.
Cancel culture.

It becomes more than just a theory when an older professional ceases to progress.

You're definitely a leader in creating and sustaining troll threads on an internet message board to the detriment of other areas of life. You won't be lying on your deathbed looking back lamenting and angry at yourself for not trolling enough!
P.S. Hacks like you need to stay in your lane, qualifying for the softer OT doesn't convey anything significant though apparently Igloi has no way to object to you appropriating his name.

No. You put yourself there.
It depends on the region. I make 38k and I'm 37, but I save as much as I can and live with my fiancée, who also works. She makes 42k and we have savings, plus I put about $700 a month away for retirement. No college debt either. The key is to live within your means!

I had the very same impression as I watched the women run 10,000 meters and there was a 38-year-old with 4 kids trying to finish in the top 3 out of 41 runners. Then some idiotic photo appeared on the screen showing her husband in a U-Haul because there were no rental cars available. I thought: What are they trying to prove ?
As has many times been said.....many athletes competing in the trials have already won their 'gold medal'. They can spend the rest of their life saying they made the OT's. They know they have no hope, but to the non-running public that's practically the same as going to Tokyo,
Young guns are coming in and swinging much faster now. I think early 30s is it for track events. Maybe marathon there is hope but only if they were on Rupp level. So many NCAAs in the trials and they performed very well this year.
It's up to each athlete to make that decision based on their financial situation, and ideas and goals they have after they leave pro running.
I doubt that there are many that can just start up retire from pro running and do nothing else, most will need to do something.
But scenario applies to any athlete, track, tennis, pro football, etc... athletes have to be dragged away from the area. What do they say, "athletes die twice." ? Most will keep at it until the business tells them it's over, or their body just breaks.

So impressed with so many ncaa athletes and even a number of HS athletes.

OK, but at some point you’re just kidding yourself if you’re a 28 year old 7th place Olympic Trials finisher with $500 in savings.
I was watching the Spanish championships yesterday. Third in the women's triple jump was a woman, I can't remember her name, something like Sarapio, who is a two time Olympian, twelve time Spanish champion. She's 39 and can't hope to win over Peleteiro, but she has a full time job as a teacher, which in Spain is a good solid income, and she appears to enjoy competing. Who wouldn't do that if they could?
If they want to keep running, what is it to anyone else? Isn’t that the letsrun dream, to go all in on running? I respect the heck out of the people who keep trying, if you’re gonna live you might as well enjoy it. Can’t believe I read the whole thread, shouldn’t have bothered clicking on it

Pretty clear in yesterday’s final that youth is taking control of yesterday’s champions.

Hacks like me? What are your credentials in the sport?
Never used myself as a solipsistic reference point, that's more of a SoCal thing.

Yeah, if Igloi's Ghost had his way each even would have 8 people selected by a committee and the entire Trials would last 2 hours.
