He was a great coach. Cal is impossible to be good. Even Tony and Shayla had struggles. whoever is next will be up against the same - hard to recruit out of state without $$ and hard to compete against the east africans with priviliiaged cali kids

His fastest men's 5k runner was 14:33 this year outdoors (14:29 indoors). A place like Cal should be able to develop a few walk-ons or small scholarship athletes to sub 14 each year. ESPECIALLY when you go to the Stanford Invite, Mt. Sac, Brian Clay, and Payton Jordan. Amazing opportunities to run fast and 14:33 is the best they could do outdoors? No excuses.

Maybe 10 years ago but look at the demographic shift of California from 2006, 2016, 2026. Especially in the Nor Cal area.
Then look who’s on the rosters of west region teams making it to nattys. Or those scoring at the indoor / outdoor meets.
While I agree Cal has been lack luster it is incredibly hard to get in there, they have little money and the state of Ca isn’t helping. It’s a nice little 9-14th in the region team.

I agree that Cal should be much better, but this is letsrun in a nutshell, thinking Cal should have WALK ONS running sub 14 hahaha
This is a bad take even for letsrun. No wonder nobody is ever happy here.
Are you f#$@ing kidding me?! There are probably 5 schools in the nation who MIGHT have kids walking on of that caliber, and I bet they're grad students.

14:00 is nothing. Cal is one of the best academic schools in the country in the state with the best running talent. They obviously have scholarships and distance definitely gets more than zero.
D3 Wisconsin Lacrosse with no scholarships has 1 runner at 13:54 and 4 others between 14:02 and 14:06. And only 2 of the 5 were seniors.
Sub 14 is a very reasonable goal for a 9:05 guy after a few years. A decent coach can do that easily.

Ha, no he was not a good coach. Cal has done NOTHING in his time there. So bad they wouldn’t even show up to regionals in XC. Cal is one of the best universities in the world and has an incredible amount of resources. They make the right hire and they could be amazing. We shall see, often times these schools hire the wrong coaches, look at UCLA right now.

Bobby is a knowledgable guy. Solid coach. A bit old school. Was the program underperforming? Hard to say.
Very few people who post here have any idea how complicated it is coaching at the D1 level. It's very hard to develop people when money and numbers, especially numbers, are limited. Not to mention Cal is a hard school to get into academically. Sports aren't really a focus there and XC/track are pretty far down the list .
Could they have done better. Maybe. But without resources the next hire will have still have their work cut out for them.
Like I said above, maybe they should just promote the assistant. She honestly was doing a good job on the women's side... though there are more women's scholarships available than there are men's so there's that.
Where's all the sprint jobs at?! Seems like 90% of the head coaching positions open out there right now are all listed as Head XC/Track coach...which I would assume means they are looking for a distance oriented head coach to run the entire program.
You bring ip a good point... D3 coaches know how to recruit to unfunded events using an admit only. This is important for a high academics school with a low acceptance rate. Underfunded D1 programs like Cal could learn from the D3 coaches who are successful with walk ons.
Some of the other P4 schools are bathing in cash and locating 28+ scholarships. Plus they have lower admission standards and lower out of state tuition price tags. The public California schools are not able to compete with that. How are Cal and Ucla doing with NIL money? They are really funded more like mid majors.

Rumor has it that Cal will be reaching out to a local coach to fill the position. What does "local" mean?

Stanford?
Santa Clara?
Pacific?
Saint Mary's?
USF?
SF State?
Carpenter at USF used to work at Boston University, as did Cal director Robyne Johnson.
They never overlapped, but maybe they've know each other pretty well.
