I think what Sam is trying to say is that even a small amount of recruiting, especially by a high profile coach, can go a long way. Olaf will continue to get guys like they do now, and they have been very successful with that. It won't be that hard to convince a few other already proven runners to consider St. Olaf. He wont have to focus on recruiting, or spend that much time doing it. Thornton did not spend any time recruiting and look what he got. The plus is that now they can try to field events that they haven't been able to, like the pole vault and javelin for example. It really shouldn't be that hard to do for Lundin, or any coach for that matter, because the school has alot of positives. It just requires that ability to do it, and obviously Lundin has that.
People don't go to Olaf to run. They go there for the school or education that is offered there. Alot of runners who are interested in science/medicine and music consider the school because it is one of the top in that regard. With the new science building being built, and their indoor facility, they have alot to offer. Considering that, it is not surprising Hauck chose Olaf. The school recruits itself.
While the U doesnt have alot of in state competition, they have to worry about recruits going elsewhere such as UW madison. So obviously Lundin can do a good job convincing guys to go to the U instead of elsewhere. I fail to see your point.
Consider this scenario: Madisions cross country coach leaves and goes to Hamline. what would you say? That it won't effect Hamline at all? It obviously would positively impact the school, both in terms of recruiting and having a coach who knows how to get it done. In the same regard, Lundin is one of the best track coaches and I don't expect that to change. Just the talent level will change. Its almost harder to coach the really talented guys because of the pressure and whether or not they can actually improve anymore. If you talk to any of the athletes at the U right now, you will see that they are saddened their coach is leaving. They have alot of respect for him and that shows alot about his character and abilities.
