He began the sustained exploration and colonization of the New World. One may think he was a despicable human being. One may think that the colonization of the Western Hemisphere was a tragedy, not a triumph. But his place in history is based upon his voyages being the beginning of that process. And whether or not he set foot on the North American continent does not seem relevant to that.

The reason he sailed southwest was he was looking for India which is at the latitude where the Caribbean Islands are. If he came upon Florida he first he would have passed it by. The Florida ocean seabed is too shallow to get close to in a ship. When he return on future voyage he headed where his crew knew there were women.
An ugliness about Columbus is that he sold native girl to his crewmen; as young as 9-10. A disgusting individual in many ways.
