Quite a few people referencing 4chan as an ideal model. That's probably not a great sign for the sort of people you're attracting to your site.
I would love a ban on political posts and some sort of system that would weed out actual hate speech. Being associated with this site is rising to 4chan levels and you might be losing the moderates and running fans because of it.
I don't care about the formatting
Would you care to define hate speech? Let me guess, any speech you don't agree with?
I do tend to disagree with hate speech yes, but not everything I disagree with is hate speech because that would be ridiculous. Here’s a handy guide for you:

Totally normal thing to say. These are the people driving away your traffic Letsrun staff.

Erik, I like the main forum as is, but here is one improvement. On other forums I'm on, I have the ability to edit my comment for 90 seconds after I post. That way, if I see a typo, I can correct it.
It would also be nice to have an app for the message board.
I would like to see a registration only forum added where runners would be required to provide their real names to LetsRun, but they could use a handle to post. No one without a registered handle could post in this forum. This would allow those of us with a serious question who don't mind letting like-minded runners know who we are to post questions and get answers. Alternately, these threads could appear on the main forum, but anonymous posters would not be able to post on these threads.
I don't mind juvenile high school humor occasionally, but let that stay on the main board.
Quoting because I'd love to see this as well.
actually delete offensive posts when reported.
what do i mean by offensive posts?
How about:
1. Detailed plans on how to commit organized mass homicide against non-conservatives
2. posts about lynching black people
...both of these posts were up for several days or weeks after multiple reportings......while the moderator would busily delete posts complaining about those posts almost instantly. These are just 2 examples from a looooooooonnnngggg history of very questionable moderation. The only plausible explanation is that the site condones these views.
absolutely sickening and inexcusable.
if you have time futz around with meaningless upgrades that no one has asked for, then you have time to delete reported posts.
only other request i have is the ability to hide posts or kick them to the 2nd page with enough down votes......almost no one wants the Sand Dunes, Banana Bread and jamins of the world to have dozens of useless inane attention seeking posts on the front page.
don't mess with the overall messageboard layout/design, no one is complaining and you'd be ruining a good thing....in 5-10 years people will intentionally design sites like this for nostalgic reasons....be ahead of the curve!
Only thing I can think of is when looking up threads is to have the ability to search by oldest to newest, newest to oldest, by year and most popular to least popular. Other than that keep every thing the same.
I've visited the forum since the beginning and less in recent years cause of all the negativity and trolling. Please have required registration. I miss real runners having serious discussions. Most people probably don't even realize the forum used to be great. There must be so much s*** now that even if something is reported it's not immediately removed. There's so much crap and fake news.
Ability to edit posts
you do not need to re-design the whole forum, it is mostly very good as it is. however...
* forum front page - have name of last user to post in each thread next to the date
* sub-forums or "channels" - the problem you have with the current setup is that there are a lot of posts that don't fit into any of the current channels. you currently have: non-running, pro-news/info/results, college running, high-school running, masters running, training advice/discussion, injury/nutrition, LRC Community/where to run/race reviews. it said in your post that you have 5 but it looks as though you actually have 8 so maybe you're not the guy to be leading this topic.
this setup is firstly, very, very, American-centric. in my country there is virtually no "college running" at all. there is some, but there is very little news about it and no websites dedicated to it and no one I know of knows anything at all about it other than Roger Bannister ran for Oxford University (if you want to look it up it's called BUSF British Universities Sports Federation). in the US, by contrast, "college running" is the peak of non-pro running and anyone who is not a pro or in college is almost certainly not an athlete. this means that 90% of athletics in your country takes place in "college running" while 90% of athletics in my country does not fit in any of your categories.
you will no doubt reply along the lines that 90% of your users are from the US. but this is a chicken and egg situation. are your users predominantly from the US because that's who you accommodate, so other folk go elsewhere, or do you accommodate them because that's who you have? I've been coming here for a year and still feel like an outsider trying to speak a foreign language and at least one category that accommodates experiences outside the tiny box that is the US might help.
a category for historical topics would be welcome. I tend to think of "non-running" as being discussion of tv programmes and whether or not Donald Trump is a scaled lizard space alien, so a category for discussion about anything not recent (pro-news/info/results feels to me like it means current stuff).
a category for rankings and statistics would also be welcome.
* Tagging system ("show posts tagged Alan Webb") - to my mind this is an essential precursor to a better search function. you need tags first, then you can have something approaching a useful search.
* Improved search - essential. the current search is a joke. it isn't in fact a real search function, it is just a way for you to say, "we have a search function," without actually having a usable search function.
I'm not overly fussed about functionality for logged-in users but the facility to edit a post within some reasonable time of posting it would be useful.
cheers.

I'm not the one driving traffic away. btw now that I think about it I would miss the normies if they left :( please stay
1. Update the "useful threads" sticky master-thread.
2. Fix the broken search function.
Everything else is fine as is.
There is a certain marvelous coach who posts frequently in threads not directly related to his miraculous training system. I would like an easy way to never see comments from that coach ever again.
I was also irritated by the repetitive posting of animated GIFs, but there are simple steps I took on my end to never see them again, so no worries there.

That's called Reddit, if you want that go to Reddit.
Mandatory registration with an identifiable account to try and cut down on the number of useless trolls.
I want to see NO CHANGES! This forum is refreshing, please leave it alone.
Is this for real? There is so much low hanging fruit, so I can't imagine why you need any help with ideas.
If you add a premium post many people might lose interest.
I have a crazy amount of friends on Facebook and LinkedIn. I love those, but most people
are not very active.

This!
No whitespace, please!..
Letsrun is the last readable website in my favorits.
I come to LR for "burning my brain's processor cycles" by reading "on autopilot". Layout and typography are perfect for that.
