Donavan Brazier Just Broke 4:00

The 3:59 isn’t a big deal.. the way he finished it to break 4 is A big deal. But most importantly you have to look at the whole picture... he came back and ran 46.00 on a Indoor 4x4 in December.

Let’s put this is perspective using the last two great American half milers: Nick Symmonds and Khadevis Robinson, hell throw in Duane Solomon for good measure.

Neither of these guys could have a meet like this in their career. Actually Solomon would have been the one to come closest to this type of effort.

Sure KD would easily give you the 46.00, maybe not in December but let’s just say he can, he do wouldn’t have broken 4 In that way. Give him 4:02 at best but with a more aggressive race.

Nick, sure he would easily break 4, but hell he would come no where near that 46.00 split on a really. 49 if he’s lucky especially in December.

Duane in his prime I think could have broken 4 in a rabbitted race but to then come back and run 46.00 in December I doubt it.

So what Brazier did this past weekend was huge, that was a Seb coe type of performance!

He is laying a foundation. Your definition of “base” likely is Lydiard in nature. However, you cannot know where your fitness stands without racing. An over-distance, no pressure race after not having raced in 5 months is actually a really good idea, seeing as how the whole goal of training is to race in the first place. Smart athlete and smart coach.

I think that outdoors, Jim Ryun once ran something like 3:55 and then split 46 an hour later. Maybe a very muddy track.

Considering this was nothing more than a fitness check, 4:03 is a good early season result. Also, last year Leo wasn't running much faster in premier events.

I looked at the thread title and was startled, I then realized wait he has run 1:43. But still impressive for an 4/8 guy, hopefully got his miles up.

Mile is around 1:08; 4x400 is around 2:16, that’s hours btw.

I definitely agree that he is in at least 3:56 shape right now. For those who haven’t seen the video, Brazier briefly smiled while crossing the line then immediately transitioned into a smooth jog towards the stairs and off the track. To contrast, Manzano made it about seven meters past the line before walking and looked a bit beyond death. Oh, and his shoe was untied the whole last 600.

A working video is here. Jeebus Christo, he looked SMOOTH over the last 400m. Penultimate lap was around 28, and he was a buttery 26 over the bell lap.

A&M has been impressive in this event group. Michael Preble then the Hernandez guys then Brazier then Fray now Sammy Watson.

Pretty strong pattern.

He ran 4:12 indoors against Grant Fisher as a junior. Then he ran 4:09 indoors as a senior. 4:07 outdoors as a senior. He is now 20yrs 8mos old. He would be a college junior, had he stayed.

He is the fastest collegiate 800m runner of all time. Do you really think that 3:59 is a WOW time for the fastest NCAA 800m runner ever, who is now 20? Look at others, like Jim Ryun or Joachim Cruz?

He could have run 3:59 as a freshman, also in December if they had wanted to force it.

It really doesn't add up. He was a 3:05 at 1209 m and closed in 27/54 if you want to omit the decimals.

1209 m: 3:04.68 (=3:05, not 3:04)

last 400 m: 54.21

last 200 m: 26.72 (=27, not 26)
