Just for kicks I also checked 2003. In that year the 50th best women's time in the 1500 was 14.41% slower than the 50th best men's time. The figure for the 10k was 14.73%. So in 2003 the women's 10k was "comparitively weaker" by 0.32%, or about 5 seconds in a 32 minute race.

The WAVA tables are compiled to compare masters athletes' performances not junior performances so to use them for a purpose for which they weren't designed is dubious. If you extrapolate the decrease in performance with age backwards to age 18 you'd expect to see junior records which are better than the open records which wouldn't make sense.

You guys are all missing the real story here. How long until Scherf catches Hafer???!!! Right now the gap is one minute, but there could be some epic duels on the Harvard track over the next year.

And I'll bet $5 she breaks a bone in her foot/leg in the next year.

ok just compare the times to the current AR's:

Rupp runs 1:02 slower than Meb's AR

Sherf runs 1:59 slower than Deena's AR

This is a simple and realistic comparison.Rupp is 57 seconds

closer to setting an AR in the 10 than Sherf.Case closed.

the events are going on for different amounts of time, I don't think a straightforward comparison is very fair. If I'm 10 seconds away from an 800m world record and 10 seconds away from a 1500 world record they both don't hold the same weight.

I do agree that the performance by Rupp is the better one though.

Where would the performances be in the world, in 2004? That may reveal which one is better by current standards.

What about participation numbers? There is a much lower participation among the women than the men. That's why straightforward comparison based on AR, WR, or the worst comparison Top 50, because it involves depth would not be accurate.
