What could Wariner run for a 5K?
Well, using Weldon Johnson as a standard, I'd give Wariner a modest 13:30.
Now you really should be asking about his marathon future. That's where it's at.
Anyone who thinks Jeremy Wariner's marathon performance was a fluke is an idiot. Dominating all three rounds of the Athens games and winning the gold medal with a time of 44.00 is no fluke. So Williamson beat him twice recently, who cares. Wariner isn't in top condition right now and doesnt need to be until later in the season. The 400 at the Drake relays was only his second 400 since turning pro while Williamson has been racing all indoor for Baylor.
Jeremy is a champion because he knows how to pace himself during the season and know when to dig deep when it counts. Look at his progression last season:
NCAA Indoor Champion - 45.39
NCAA Outdoor champion - 44.71
Olympic 2004 Trials - 44.37
Olympiad 2004 XXXVIII 400 Round 1 - 45.56
Olympiad 2004 XXXVIII 400 Semi-Finals - 44.87
Olympiad 2004 XXXVIII 400 Final - 44.00
Could Wariner break 2:20 for the marathon?
Regarding Jeremy running a marathon: Sprinters don't have enough slow twitch muscle to run such distances. Most probably couldn't complete a marathon.
But Flojo would have owned Paula if she didn't die prematurely.
"Sprinters don't have enough slow twitch muscle to run such distances. Most probably couldn't complete a marathon."
John Tracknut you're an idiot. If 300lb donut eating slobs can complete a marathon it obviously doesn't take much physical ability to finish one. It boggles my mind the disrespect of sprinters on this board. Especailly form "distance guy" whose abilities don't amount to a hill of beans in a distance run.
When Flojo announced running the marathon she busted out a 20 minute 5k. It was a poor choice by her and her manager. The other poster is right not enough slow twitch. RIP Flojo!
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this....but did Johnson lose in april is not the right question....How many races in April in the 400 did Johnson win against some of the worlds best over 400 meters when he was still in college is the quesiton...not when he was 23 and on. Wariner is just one year removed...and only because he left early. MJ was more of a 100/200 guy in college.
And he wasn't a 44 flat guy at Wariners point in his career so people please leave that crap at home. MJ ran 43.98 to go under 44 for the first time when he was almost 25.
Just curious...MJ ran 20.07 in 1988...what did he do in 1999....Was he injured?
