Just a thought -- If Smith has some ties to Virginia and his wife likes horses and has ties to Virginia (I don't know any of this; just going by previous posts), might he have resigned so he could accept the job at William & Mary?

You will fall over when i tell you who is the coach

ok good for you. Look I never said it was a spur of the moment thing. Of course these things take time to work out, and go through. The alumni and donors have been disappointed with Martin basically the entire time he has been coach. You can say what you want about Alberto, but Galen himself said he felt his ideas about his training clashed with Martin's training, and he wouldnt have worked as his distance coach. He already saw the clash in training needs with McGrath. Who cares what Alberto is planning. What I am saying, is it isnt his fault for this situation. Alot of people are having a say in this situation, and Martin is as much to blame as alumni for them not liking him. Its always been a two way street in this thing. But going out and making accusations is not your place, because the facts you obviously do have do not involve any knowledge of Alberto Salazar. Thanks.
you have the same argument with BFM as what I said, because he seems to back Alberto from the insults and accusations. Look what I said, because I will back up your attack on his post.
it will be a little puppet that will end up destroyed as a coach

I am sure that Marnie Mason had Martin's back. Fuck you too Marnie. I'm sure you hung the weeds with other cobra snakes Alberto and Phil. Nothing like an assistant undermining you.
For some reason, this pisses me off badly.
yOU ARE RIGHT THERE IS NOTHING LIKE AN ASSISTANT YOU HAVE STOOD BY AND HELPED FOR YEARS UNDERMINING YOU. BUT IF YOU THINK IT IS MARNIE, you are a complete IDIOT! Everyone including Coach Smith knows the insider who was working to undermine Coach Smith was the one, the only Coach BENEDICT (Bill) Lawson as he has come to be known thoughout the coaching community. He had not only his nose, his head and his whole body so far up Associate AD Jim Bartko's (in charge of the Nike account) anal cavity it is no WONDER he was always so BROWN (TAN). He has been working hard on this for some time now. It is to Oregon's credit that they saw through this scam, allowed Martin to do what he needed to do for his personal peace of mind, and not make the "Benedict" the "Law"-son as interim head coach! Great SLAM!!! Thank you Oregon! Coach Smith is just one of several of the "Benedict's" casualties in his quest to make himself look good to the AD's. Marnie doesn't have enough credibility in her field of expertise to accomplish this with the administration plus Coach Smith kept a very short leash on Marnie while his trusted assistant who made a ton of money coaching ONE event was allowed to run rampantly wild. Coach Benedict has been upset because his events were being taken away one by one. Let's not forget he is the coach who took 2002 18.5 pole vaulter Trevor Woods to a whopping 16 - 17 foot PV when he "changed his technique" for the better. Then he got the NCAA dec champ Santiago Lorenzo hurt at Regional Meet in 2003 throwing the javelin when there was no need to compete at Regionals since he was already qualified in the Dec. Benedict did this for his own ego. Because he stressed Tommy Skipper out at the NCAA's in 2004 he was fired as PV coach the following week. He was also relieved of the high jump, long jump and triple jump duties after it was concluded that his techniques did nothing to help the athletes and were in fact helping to finance the orthopedic community in Eugene. Rumors were that he was about to be relieved of the Dec this year very soon. He had every reason to want Coach Smith out and so the Alberto saga gave him all the ammunition he needed. Ask the man, Coach Smith and I am sure he will have no problem enlightening you on the Judas in the camp.
Why do guys always want to blame the woman? Sorry, this time it was a man, if you can call him that - I call him Benedict.
Go Ducks!
you know some stuff about the alumni, thats great. Im sorry for saying you know nothing. But that still doesnt mean that the situation is any different than what I said. Of course there was pressure, there always is in these types of things. None of the people in Eugene have really liked Martin since he moved to Eugene. People like to feel like they are a part of the team, and Martin never let them feel that. Its still unfortunate it is ending this way, but things change, and sometimes you have to move on. But dont attack Alberto. You know about the alumni, but you don't know about him do you? Stick with what you know. That'll help alot. Im not criticising anyone here, or accusing. So just dont do it.
What about the kids who have committed and are being recruited to attend Oregon next year. No wonder Coach Smith hasn't talked to me in the last two weeks. Well, I was 99% sure on Oregon. Now I do not know what to do. I feel so bad for Coach Smith, he didn't deserve this in the least. I have in the past and will in the future continue to stand up for him. I hope he finds another job very soon and continues to succeed at coaching.
don't feel too horrible about it. you say you are a future duck, and are not sure, but you hold strong loyalty to Martin Smith already. He is a great championship coach, but people in Eugene were upset because he focuses so much on winning, that he never gave the fans a chance to see many of the best athletes on the team. He kind of wrote his own death certificate with the eugene community when he did that because alot of people love track here and want to see their team compete. Jason Hartmann was basically a ghost in Eugene, hardly ever getting to be seen in a race, as for others. So dont judge the oregon program and Eugene by Martin Smith alone. If you are interested in going there, it is a great school and a fun place. Just dont want you to get the idea that the school simply screwed him over or something like that. Hope you keep oregon in your thoughts if you think you might want to go there.
I didn't attack Phil Knight or Alberto. I simply responded to your comment making it sound like thay had nothing to do with it.
You are also wrong by saying he wasn't forced out. They would not be buying out his contract if they weren't forcing him to resign.
Your comment about all of the people in Eugene not liking Martin is incorrect. Two generations od Ducks here and we like having a good track and field team not just a distance team, Smith did that.
Oregon is the place to go now that Martin is gone. Pat Tyson is one of the greatest people/coaches in the world. Peolpe may not agree right now but anyone who has ever had the expereince of being around the guy will agree... there is something special there. Pats a class act and more positive then anyone I have ever met. Martin was not a reason to go to Oregon before. Pat Tyson is! If you have the chance to go to Oregon, GO! You don't want to miss out on this new and improved chapter.
Cheers
I'm glad I can now go back to Eugene and be proud of the the team we once had!
"Phil Knight and Alberto had everything to do with it. Knight forced Moo's to get rid of Smith.
They have bought the University of Oregon athletic department and they call the shots." - that is attacking them, by saying that Nike - which Phil and Alberto are part of, is bullying their way to call the shots. You have no facts to stand with what you are claiming here. and Phil doesnt give ultimatums like that with his generosity, I'm sorry.
Alot of people in Eugene do not like Martin Smith. Yea, people like having a good track team, and people are happy about that, but are not happy with Smith as a person and coach. Im kind of tired debating about this. I just dont want people pointing fingers in this thing trying to just blame someone, and say that so and so is a big jerk because of this situation.
Jerry Schumacher, Robert Chapman, Robert Gary, or Jason Vigilante - give any one of these guy 5-6 scholarships and they would roll out a trophy team at NCAA's every year.
I dont want to argue about this. Argue with these other people, BFM, NWguy or whomever is showing a case of not wanting people to point fingers. Im with them, but obviously others are not.
you attacked them by making this statement about Nike controlling everything, and getting their way. You cant make rash statements like that. Im done arguing about this too. This is ridiculous. Martin's gone, time for change. But people had problems with Martin the entire 6 years or however long. liking a good track program and liking the coach are two different things. Martin was a jerk to a lot of people. He kind of shot himself in the foot by not playing to the community more I think.
Ask Ty Willingham.

Man, has this kind of thing ever happened anywhere else at a US college?
Point taken. I was thinking track/cross.

martin could have treated a lot of people better.
A lot of people could have treated Smith better. The man was there to do a job and was accomplishing the ultimate goals of the program with integrity, despite the wishes of the know-it-alls in the Eugene/UO peanut gallery, he wasn't there to play grabass with the townies and assorted hangers-on, who apparently came to him with a hand out more often than they gave without any indended personal profit or agenda. They simply couldn't back the hell up to give the man room to work. The sabotage worked, the Lame Ducks can pat themselves on the backs for years to come as the program slumps completely off the national radar because the results of their actions which they reaped today will have scared off any potential candidates who could accomplish even half of what Smith has during his harpy-addled tenure.
Davey Johnson was fired via the fax the same day he was named American league manager of the year for the Baltimore Os..I know its pro sport but ..
