Why does everyone feelthat it is necessary to correct poor grammar and spelling on this site? Are there really that many people with worthless english liberal arts degress? Is it that people realize they wasted lots of money on a useless education instead of learning about something worthwhile and now need to belittle others ot feel important? I'm just really curious why people care so much on an internet message board.
PDUBS,
When referring to the English language, we never use small "e". It always has to be capital "E".
"a useless education" is also wrong. The article "a" is unnecessary.
That said, why do we even bother? I wish I knew. May be it was indelibly ingrained in our psyche by our English teachers.
I'm really surprised that no one has recounted the geneology of standardized English. I don't know much about it, but from what I can remember, it hasn't been around for very long.
Anyone care to look at this problem vis-a-vis Bakhtinian speech genres? Saussure?
Why is grammar important?
Would you ever run a race in denim shorts? Would you ever show up for a training session in your Doc Martin's? You'd probably look like an ass to everyone around you.
Why then would you propose and defend arguments on a message board without a quick proof-reading. Everyone can understand you, it's just that you're going to look like an ass.
Additionally, many of the more irritating posts on this board seem to come from young know-it-alls. It's fun to agitate at times by pointing out your incompetencies at seemingly basic tasks.

Keep deluding yourself 10 lapper. I'm sure if you tell yourself that same POS lie enough times you'll actually believe it's true.
I take particular joy in reading a résumé and the accompanying cover letter from people who share your misguided belief. There's nothing more enjoyable than tossing their hideously written "messages" into the trash. It's a sad commentary on our society today when a properly written message is a cause for celebration.

We're talking a running message board here not a job resume or a covering letter. Work it out the difference and stop being so petty. I've done a thesis and had papers accepted for major physiology journals so I well and truly know the difference. There's a time to be very particular about you're spelling and grammar and there's a time where it really doesn't matter that much (although I'm sure most of us do try though...hopefully), and on this board we generally get the the message. Take you're resumes and shove them where the sun don't shine!

Highly doubtful, redundant retard!
hay mann, fcuk u, i like benig a retardd!!!!!!!!!!!
A few thoughts about grammar on message boards. I often write my messages in all "small" letters and even skip some punctuation. i also abrev some words. i try to make sure my spelling is correct though (I am sure youcan find examples, maybe even in this post, where I missed one).
I think most people ON A MESSAGE BOARD overlook obvious typos - "ot" for "to" and the like. The problem is, some posts are very hard to understand. The "rules" should be and are a bit more informal on a mesage board, but still need to have some level application.
In many cases, the point being made by the poster is lost because he did not spell correctly. Why should I take your point of view seriously if you spell basic words wrong? If you want credibility, you need to act credible.
Here, if PDUBS, had simply written that he thought the rules should be relaxed a bit on message boards and that some posters were to nit picky, he would have probably received general agreement on that point. Instead, since spelling errors and typos filled his post he had no credibility and people rejected his position - even though many probably agree with it. He was the wrong person to bring the message.
I am in a position to hire people. DO NOT SEND RESUMES WITH TYPOS AND SPELLING ERRORS. Trust me on this, it will cost you a job, you won't even get in the door for an interview to show what you can do.
As always, ymmv.
attractive. dumbass.

well the exclamtion point was there to get you yuppies to click on the thread, but everything else i just don't care enough to check my post. it's a waste of my time... just too lazy to hti the shift button.
If you are too lazy or don't care, why should anyone else? If you can't be bothered to take 30 seconds to write something coherent and presentable, why should I or anyone else be bothered to take 3 seconds to read what you wrote? You are giving us the message that whatever point you have is not very important.
I don't know you and you don't know me. All we've got to go on is what we write. You may be an international journal published author, but all I see is someone who is lazy and doesn't care about what they write. That is not someone whose thoughts are going to get much respect from me or many others, regardless of any underlying message you are trying to convey.
I just don't see why some people insist on instantly labelling themselves as morons. That's akin to giving your competitors a lap head start in a race, a deficit you are not likely to overcome.

that may sound better, but grammatically it would be incorrect.

Huh? Is that another example of getting your point across? (or, is it "you're" point across?) "Work it out the difference" ???? Care to explain that one to me?

As long as we are being all picky about this, "teacher", "darkness" was correct in the first place.
The 's' does not belong. The word "care" refers to "those" not to "one". Take away the "one of" and you'll see. It is
"...those who care"
not
"...those who cares"

Obviously many people care about proper grammar or there wouldn't be such a fuss. I personally find it almost painful to read some of these threads because they are so poorly written. I am not an English major and I am sure someone can find something wrong with what I am writing right now, but when a thread is completely filled with typo's and poor grammar, it is a fact that many people will not take them as seriously. There was a thread a while back where a few people were arguing about how easy college was and each post was so poorly written and I honestly could not take anything these people had to say seriously. Had they taken the time to use proper english, I would have listened more intently to what they had to say. In life and on message boards, proper English does matter to many people and I guess it is up to each individual to decide how seriously they want to be taken when they respond to these posts.
I am of the opinion it matters to some degree... like just as something that allows others to clearly understand the point and message of a given post. Beyond that there really isin't any point that I can see.
Although it always is cool to distract from a posts actual point by tearing into poor gramatical useage or mistakes.
In my native Kenya, there is this common joke that goes something like this- literally translated : "This thing (the English language) came in a ship (from England) and even the fish(es) of the sea/ocean never knew it and hence don't speak it.
The fact of the matter is that English is complex and intricate.
Several examples will suffice;
Saying "I can/can't be able" is grammatically wrong.
Saying "discuss about" is wrong.
Saying "more better, more faster more smarter....." e.t.c. is obviously wrong but some people keep saying it.
Saying "cope up with" is grammatically wrong and of course ending sentences in prepositions is not only wrong but obscene. I heard it here (USA) first- "Where you at?" Or something close to that.
English is a language. We are all learning and no one has the entire grasp of it- I believe. However, some people murder it and make it sound horrible.

In the relevant sentence, "of those" is a prepositional phrase. (Look that term up.) The subject (look that one up as well) of the sentence is "one," not "those." "One" is singular, rendering "cares" the correct verb.
This is extraordinarily basic grammatical stuff and on this basis alone you deserve to fail every language course you have taken, are now taking and will take in the future. I don't doubt, however, that you are in fact a sixth-grade teacher or perhaps a JuCo or community-college professor somewhere in America, probably south of Maryland and east of Texas.
I am one of those who care.....
I am one of those who believe.......
Marions sixth grade teacher and darkness are correct.
"care" refers to "those."
I (Son Native) am like so many others (those).
Therefore, those "so many others" believe, just like me, that the Earth rotates on its own axis.
So it is correct to say that I am one of those (many people who believe/ those many people who care to know) that the Earth rotates on its own axis.
I wish I had the descriptive ability to make you see it.
