Not BS. It's true. You have to remember a few things. The replies about this make it seem like you guys didn't follow the sport in early 2000s.

Webb went to Michigan because Ron Warhurst was going to make him the best 1500 runner in the world.

With his pedigree from HS Webb should have won every single 1500/mile NCAA title every year while in college, among other things.

These things, would have only added to his value after graduation making an even better resume commanding more money.

Alan Webb at the time had unlimited potential. Think Galen Rupp times about 50 if you were too young to follow the sport then.

If this is true she should turn pro today!

Probably she will finish hs as an amateur and then if she could legitimately medal in Rio then she'll turn pro with some sort of guaranteed tuition stipend written into he contract.

How is that tough? A full ride to Stanford is probably worth 100k pre-taxes. She can make more than twice that and still go to Stanford. If I'm Cain, I go to college but run as a pro. Just like Michelle Wie and golf.

We didn't say 7 figures per year, but who knows, we just said 7 figures. Whether that's 5 years 1.5 million or 1 million or $5 million, I have no idea.

I didn't even read this thread but anyone who thinks she is getting 7 figures is living in a fantasy land!! Just how popular do you think track and field is???(especially distance running) Distance running is a complete niche sport with zero popularity outside of the dedicated fans.

Now maybe 5-10 years down the line if she wins a couple Olympic gold medals, then she MIGHT get Allyson Felix type compensation. But even that would be incredibly unlikely. Look at how many American female swimmers have won Olympic gold medals and how many actually make 7 figures. Missy Franklin probably will but that's it from this generation. With the attractiveness of the athletes, swimming is way more popular than track anyway.

If Mary Cain does as some point make 7 figures, I would bet that would be a first among distance runners. Sorry, we just don't have the marketability.

Except Mary Cain is totally unmarketable.

a world class athlete is "in it" already 100%. who pays their rent is really immaterial. shoes are shoes. A contract is a contract. You are a fruitcake if you think a professional athlete is somehow "principled" in who they sign with. Nobody says, "Oh...I just want to make less money".

Webb was on Letterman. Will Cain be on Letterman? Conan? Leno?.....Maher? I really doubt it. What is the "barrier" she is going to break? the 4:00 1500? Who cares...nobody knows who Cain is, and nobody will really care.

Cain does have great future potential, but the key word is "potential". If she continues to improve, she will be a world beater, if not, she will fade away. 7 figures right now, not a chance. Remember folks, the gals get paid less than the men. I think top end right now she could make $150-200,000 a year if Nike wanted to gamble on her continuing to improve. If she was 25 right now, I think she would be lucky to earn $50,000 with her times, but being a young prodigy greatly increases her earning potential, again as long as she continues to improve. If she progress to be one of the best in the world, it would definitely be worth the investment, what is a few hundred grand to Nike? As far as other endorsements, outside of places like Letsrun and other hardcore track fans, no one knows who she is. No talk show appearances, no ESPN cutting in live from Sportscenter to broadcast her races, hell USATF didn't even issue a press release about her 4:04 1500!! So right now, there is little to no money to be made for her from other product endorsements outside of running clothes, gear, etc. and no one can pay what Nike can.

I guess Rupp proved most of us wrong and won silver and now has 12:58/26:48 PRs, but times at that level go back almost 20 yrs.

I doubt that the self-absorbed female jogger or triathlete would eat up Cain the way some of you seem to think they would? She is not as charismatic or photogenic as even some of the girls out there now who are running about the same.

I rank her actually a LOT like Rupp was until recently. Remember how awkward he was? Saying "Ummm, You know ... " 47 times per interview? And his awkward goofy ears? Cain suffers from the same type of deficiencies.

Think about a runner as great as Rupp, who can be made to look weak by standing next to Ritz when he takes his shirt off. Ritz is 5'7" / 120lbs ... that's right.

I hate to be a dick, or THE DICK, but Cain looks the same way standing next to Martinez or Emma Coburn or DiCrescenzo. These are pretty girls, but they are just pretty in distance running, they are not supermodels.

If you could gather 7-10 endorsements worth $150-200k each (if you were blessed with the charisma of Elvis) then why was Suzie Favor Hamilton whoring just 8 yrs after retiring?

Also, unless she dopes better than the others, or somehow the entire Olympic field is thwarted from doping (but she still can) she is not going to win any Olympic gold.

I remember Barringer pushing well above 7 figures when brands were looking for the face of their product leading into London. Cain is the same, however, she has mentioned going to school.

Just because she is going to school does not mean she will compete in the NCAA (Alyson Felix is a good example)

A lot of the LRC crowd thought Robby Andrews was going to get millions. He probably is lucky if he is getting shoes and a singlet. No company is going to give you money if you don't generate money for them. Somebody throws out a dollar figure without having a clue what they are talking abou.t
