Mike Rice - RUTGERS basketball coach - what a psycho!

I remember when Rice was an assistant at Pitt. He cursed like a sailor on the sideline. He couldn't even give a compliment to a player coming to the bench without screaming an obscenity. They made him stand at the far end of the bench because his tirades were coming through on the radio coverage, which is seated right next to the coaches.

When he left for Robert Morris quite a few people were not sad to see him go.

Well, men acted like that back in the day, I lived in a Irish Italian neighborhood and that's the way men were brough up. I am probably biased here, but I believe the "baby boomer" generation is one of the largest groups of well-behaved people of all time. Look at most of the young people today, no respect for anything, old people, police, teachers, neighbors, etc etc.......the list is very long. I say no more "time outs, stress cards"... etc, the new way isn't working very well. I say, allow the young boys to fight again(age group), be challenge by pure pressure with-in their peers, be made to work hard and do chores, and be held accountable for disrespecting their elders.

This is serious. Rutgers's move to the Big Ten should be cancelled. The athletic department should fold. Clearly Rutgers is not capable of handling intercollegiate athletics.

There's another thread on the new Tiger Woods Nike ad. The ad says:

"Winning takes care of everything."

Rice should have won more and people would have been more likely to look the other way by saying his method is "getting results." That's why Bob Knight could get away with it for so long. (That, and most of his players left with incredible loyalty to him and IU.)

It's amazing what people can get away with when they win. When they lose, suddenly those same things become fireable offenses.

That is a little extreme! It's just basketball, it's not as if it is a sport that matters (too much march, even though it's april, madness). If other sports (which there are many) don't have these problems why should they suffer?

Fire the coach, maybe the AD, although it's not as if this is a Sandusky thing - as SG (can't believe I'm agreeing with him) said, these are adults (18+) who allowed this to happen. Scholarships are NOT on the line in this era of utube where almost everything can be (and is) filmed for public consumption. Athletes (they are people after all) need to take action to prevent this from happening, they are NOT powerless, and if they think that they are then they have been educated poorly. Doesn't mean shoot the guy (too much of that in the schools), but learn to stand up for your rights as an athlete, which includes knowing proper codes of conduct. Where were the other coaches who knew of this behaviour? too many people sitting on their hands not wanting to get "involved". That is the problem with this generation - someone else will take care of the problem, so it escalates until it is out of control.

If Bobby Knight was coaching today (in the age of twitter, social media, etc) and was quoted in a magazine that Puerto Ricans are only good for making bananas, he would be so fired on the spot.

Not sure if you're just trolling but if you really are ok with how Rice conducted himself, answer me this - what is so admirable about beating on kids who you know are obligated not to fight back? You don't see Rice throwing basketballs at his boss' head nor kicking college players for whom he has no authority to pull their scholarships. And as far as all this supposed p**sification, you realize this type of thing was completely unacceptable 10, 20, 50 years ago too, just that it was less likely for such nutjobs to get caught due to lack of video technology back in those older days.

True. You make a good point. Knight would have faced much more scrutiny and criticism in this age of YouTube and social media, and may very well have been fired sooner. I still believe that people get away with much more when they are winning though.

Folks -- the President of the University knew of the film and of the incidents when the three day suspension was decided. He is as, if not more, culpable, than the AD.

You know, I don't much care how I "sound" to you.

It happened to me, the stakes were very high, and it involved my dream at the time.

When somebody lays a hand on someone out of anger, they can get maybe one free pass if they don't do any real harm, and if the power relationship can be otherwise managed, but they need to get a warning. The second time, forget it.

When the power relationship is extreme, forget it.

There are situations where someone is in-bounds, and those where they are out-of-bounds, and it's got to do with context, control, and motivation. I saw it in the military. Even there, there are lines you don't cross in normal training. People who do cross them pay the price.

Stuff like this can be OK in football, where there are pads and helmets and guys get their bell rung...maybe.

People make mistakes, and cross the line sometimes. As long as they understand what they did, why it was wrong, and actively try not to do it again, and show progress, maybe OK depending on the situation. Nobody is perfect.

But this guy was just an a-hole. He did it repeatedly, he was arguably not in control, and in my opinion he did it out of anger. It's not even remotely justifiable as a way of getting, or keeping, a player's undivided attention. It is totally disproportionate, and violent.

Someone comes at me like that, they get one free pass, and a warning, unless it's really serious. I pray to god that I am never the victim of, or witness to, violent and unlawful abuse of power by police or other authorities.

In another direction, you know that the coach's actions are likely to be legally actionable, right? In a civil sense, there is battery and potentially other torts. Depending on what actually went on, especially if there was ever physical injury, criminal charges may be appropriate in the jurisdiction.

This is, as you guys say, "not cool". You can't stand around and watch this happen to you, or to anybody else. He wasn't even acting under any color of right, like the cops might--he was an effing basketball coach.

Was he even a college basketball player? I looked on his wikipedia page and it didn't say anything, just a bunch of coaching jobs. I'm curious how he got his position if he wasn't part of the "club". (no playing history, I mean)

In what universe is your generation better than the current one? First off, it's a little early to value the current generation, but second you guys f-ed over the economy and the environment and have left it all for the younger generations to clean up. Also, the fact that you think such behavior is a positive is not exactly a strong endorsement for your generation. Get off your high horse fake tough guy.

Well great. because those guys no doubt could find a another good college to go to after being expelled, no problem.

They should have kept escalating - if the AD didn't do anyhting, talk to a dean, then the president. Or tell a reporter, who would no doubt be more than happy to have a great scoop.
