What vitamins and supplements are most important? Which brands do you recommend? I already take two iron supplements, but that's it.
I would just take a standard multivitamin/mineral supplement. Unlikely to overdose and most bases are covered. Most supps are low in minerals reqd in large amounts like sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. The first three are easy to supplement from food. Magnesium reqs a little more work or a specific supp.
I think B1 is underrated, especially for runners. If not for its addition to processed grains, most Americans would definitely be in deficit. However, for runners the requirements are greater because the amount of pyruvate dehydrogenase in a well-trained distance runner are much higher than in an untrained person. PDH uses TPP, derived from B1, as an essential cofactor. Remember that B1 deficiency was the first vitamin deficiency described, and for good reason.
