Will Rupp break Alan Webb's Outdoor Mile AR?

No, he won't. Rupp will not be the athlete to break it, strong as he might be. 3:46.91 is hardly a mark to trifle with...hell Webb ran 1:43.8 that year as well.

Salazar said over 2 years ago that Webb has more talent than Rupp. I'll be happy to see how U.S. Track and Field can do this year

You are correct, you can't train for a mile and a 10K at the same time; from memory, Geb and KB's best mile was run indoors.

Rupp is in 3:48 shape right now easily. If he gave the mile a few months in the summer could he go 3:45 in the right conditions? yes.

Rupp is still a 10k guy. 3:33 1500 equivalent speed is not that amazing and still weak compared to what he can do in the 10k. Mo has run a 3:33. It is fast but for someone trying to win gold in the 10k it is required. The last 3 Olympic champions in the 10k have run 3:31i(Haile), 3:32(Bekele) and 3:33(Farah). Rupp's speed is good but not out of this world. You have to also keep in mind that he is focusing on the 1500-3000 this winter. He is doing a lot of very fast speed work right now and will probably will be doing the same or less come outdoors. He will not knock over 4 seconds off his time.

If Rupp trained specifically for the 1500/Mile this year, and ran a few races at that distance, then I could see him threatening the AR. But that isn't going to happen.

Furthermore, even if he did focus on the Mile AR, 3:50 and 3:46 are an ocean apart. Let's not get carried away.

What I see is the fact that our nation's best 5k/10k guy just showed us that he is very fast this year, and that's great news.

I would rather see him break his own AR in the 10k, since hes a 10k runner, and not a miler

Rupp's 3:50.9 is awesome, but he is not going to break the AR outdoors unless he focuses solely on middle distances for 2 years. By way of comparison, Gebrselassie ran 3:31.76 on an 11-lap-to-the-mile indoor track 15 years ago. That's substantially faster than Rupp's performance. Yet, Gebrselassie's outdoor PR was 2 seconds SLOWER, not 4 seconds faster. That's mostly because he was focusing on the 5&10 outdoors.

On the other hand, Rupp might be able to run close to 12:45 outdoors if everything is right and that would be impressive to the point that is was almost unimaginable for him two years ago.

Another thought for this thread... You never know when you're going to run your career best in a mile. This may be the fastest he ever runs the mile. O'Sullivan (number two on the all time indoor mile list) ran his fast mile indoors. I hope Rupp beats this time and has a sub 3:50 effort somewhere, but this was a great time.

-- armourys indoors - 3:56 indoors

--boston indoors - 3:55.18

--Furman in just under 4 minutes outdoors

--then to the drake relay's mile in 3:51.71

--Reebok grand prix in about 3:52

So in comparision RUPP is not too far behind.

I understand your point. And would have liked to see the record go in a major meet like Pre.

But Webb was feeling it at that point and there were no major meets that had a mile scheduled at the time.

He wasn't ready at Pre (bombed in the 2 mile)and Oslo was right before USTAF.

He would had to convince Monaco or some other meet to change their 1500 to a mile and I don't think they would do that.

So they organized a race in Belgium where they could set up the attempt.

The choice was either break the mile AR in a small setting or not get the record.

I think they made the right move or else we would be talking about Steve Scott's record right now not Alan Webb.

What on earth makes you think he would have run 3:48 "easilly" outdoors on Saturday?

And, even if that were true, what makes you think he could carve THREE SECONDS off of that in one season?

He could get close. Do you remember when Craig Mottrom ran 3:48.98 outdoors in 2007? I believe Webb was right in front of him in that race. If Mottrom could run 3:48, I think Rupp could do 3:47 high outdoors.

Everyone keeps talking about the 3:50 mile indoors, but shouldn't there be a conversion to outdoors from a 200m indoor banked track with twice the number of turns?

Only then can you really start the conversation of whether or not Rupp has a shot at Webb's record. To convert a 3:50 mile indoors to a 3:33 1500m outdoors is imbecile.
