Most like likely Rupp is so much of a headcase that running 7:40 would give him a panic attack, send him running for the mask and the cryo-sauna, and ruin his already hopeless chances against Gebremeskel at NB. So Salazar gave him this confidence-booster.

You complete blithering moron. That is 4:05 1600 pace. Slower than the repeats in the OP.
He's going to have to run faster than that to beat Gebremeskel. 3x1600 at goal 3000 pace (which he did) is great. It's the 15 minutes that is absurd.

If an 8:30 3k runner came on here saying he did 3x1600 in 4:32, WITH FIFTEEN MINUTES REST, nobody would argue for one second that it was a great workout. The pathetic thing is that you know that.

Hey guys, I was the one who mentioned Pre's workout but I got the times a little wrong... he averaged 4:16 it looks like. Frank Horwill posted about it on LetsRun years ago. Here's the link, it's the 2nd post in the thread.
DANGIT i JUST messed up again, he averaged 4:08, NOTTTTT 4:16. So Pre's workout was the EXACT same as Rupp (except mile instead of 1600) averaging 4:08, so I WAS right.

Many onlookers thought this was a sensational session and tipped him for the gold medal. However, we do not have 15 minutes rest after the first mile of a 5km race. It would have been better if he had done 3 x 1 mile in 4:16 with 200m jog recovery. He finished fourth in the final in a time of 13:28 (64.5/400m).

Look, with 15 minutes rest, 3x1600 at 3000 pace is simply not an impressive workout. It just isn't. Not for a good HS runner, and MUCH LESS SO for an elite. You can huff and puff and cry and look at your Galen Rupp poster all night, but it's not going to change facts.
Like I said, a nice confidence builder for Rupp, but not pushing the envelope.
I agree. Didn't Shaheen ran 4x1600m with 4:30 rest in 3:56, 3:59, 3:58, 3:58? Comparing Rupp's workout to Shaheen's workout, there is nothing to be excited about.

Haha, yeah a bit exaggerated on my part, but I have Centro in 1500, Galen in 5k/10k, and by then I'm thinking Farah in marathon. I'll change it to top 5 in the world from 1500-marathon in 4 years.
As many of you are runners and coaches, I would think that you would understand that one workout does not make an olympian.
Also, Rupp is probably doing multiple workouts a week in order to stay fit. This type of workout is not before a major championship or the olympics. The training density is low so that Galen can continue to train at a high level after this workout and endure many more workouts to come. The key to his health and continued success is the fact that he is able to train continuously. If he were tuning to run a fast 5k, they might alter the rest. This is probably a 90% effort for Galen and he walked off the track feeling good. As most distance workouts should.
People are picking apart this workout guessing what is in store for Rupp, when Salazar has been putting in 1000 of hours of planning. The letsrunners have taken one look for 10 seconds and have a "better" idea.
No you don't. Stop posting nonsense. Great workout. Probably fits in nicely with his overall training plan and goals.

Without implying that you definitely are, may I suggest that you may be confusing the concept of an impressive workout with that of a good workout? They're not necessarily the same.
