Speedwork the day before a race?

Maybe I do and maybe I don't. I didn't know this was an old thread. At least I'm consistent.

It's not exactly the same but since we are talking about pre race routines I thought I'd share what has worked for me.

If I'm doing a distance race, say, 3k or up, I do well if I run 4-7 hill sprints of about 50-80m two days before the race then a typical easy day the day prior. I feel stale if I don't run enough the day before and I feel like the hill sprints wake me up and have me feeling fast if I do them two days before. I've also done some pretty hard strides of 50-150m the before races and felt good, but I usually only emphasize strides the day before if I'm running a middle distance or sprint race. I think different things work for everyone but there's certainly something to doing short alactic sprints before race that I agree with.

We know this because ventolin has posted all kinds of examples of athletes running their best with a packed schedule of races.

Thank you...The facts are that Bob Timmons was ahead of his time. That does not mean that he knew more than modern coaches. He had to adapt over time and he did.

Many people do not admire Arthur Lydiard which is crazy. Lydiard when he started was not the same as when he was a veteran coach. You have to change and also adapt to each athlete. For us to say Lydiard or Timmons could not coach today is a bit nuts. They would learn like the rest of us.

I think where we disagree is what the word "peak," means. Ryun did peak in terms of he never ran faster than he did when he was 21 and that was in 1967.

The rest of what you said I agree with except the part about Timmons not having very good teams for a legendary coach. How do you think he got to Kansas? How do you think he got the NCAA cross country meet to come to Kansas for all those years?

Saying Timmons was not a great coach and did not have great teams is very similar to say Vin Lananna is not a great coach! Pappy I think "we is hafta disagree."

Resting is overrated? I think I am going to have to call you out on that one.

The numbers of high school and college runners with pneumonia, mono, stress fractures, Achilles Tendonitis, ITBS, hamstring tendonitis, and other problems due to fatigue is bigger than Donald Trump's hands. They are HuGe!!! Now factor in all the middle aged distance runners and marathoners into that equation.

Why don't you start a post saying fatigue is overrated and please present your rational? That thread ought to be an all-time best on LRC!

There is something wrong with saying we are going to run a race-but not all out. That is what I see wrong on your schedule. I guess I am the only one.
