I would not liked to have run for or even known this person.
If he joins Schumacher, Webb will be training with Lomong a lot. Lomong and Webb are similar miler-types that can run longer distances well.
He needs to give up the mile. He is a pure 5000 guy now, like Lagat.

I'll say this, Harry Johnson was one messed up control freak -- and a truly distasteful person.
I thought someone said that Nike exiled him to S. Korea, in order to get rid of him, and in order for Hollister to save face by saving Johnson's tail...seeing as Hollister had been a South Eugener, and had caused Johnson to leave his job at South.
Johnson had a bad reputation around town. And his kid was an obnoxious prick too. The kid may have grown out of it. Johnson...exiled for the good of all.
Somehow, he ran an amazing high school program...which may have had something to do with if you get enough bodies in the door and meat grind them young enough...a good portion survive. And I am sure he was really loyal to his high school athletes...he seemed to love to be the Pied Piper.
None of his high school runners really did much after high school.
His 30 plus year absence from track or coaching might be a tad bit of an impediment to his coaching.
Last I heard he is retired near the Oregon coast.
The floating of his name in relation to Webb is as close to insanity as anything I've ever seen on this board.

There's no special knowledge here. I just thought it seemed weird to wonder why he didn't consider certain options when we have no insight whatsoever into his decision making process. He could have considered going to train with Jama Aden, Hansons, or even going to the North Pole for all we know.
We don't know what he considered. All we know is that he decided on Portland, and most likely that means Schumacher's group.

Yes indeed. McChesney was a beast.
I don't know the coach, but it appears that he had tremendous success at the high school level; to repeatedly coach winners of state xcountry titles is a tremendous achievement. So maybe he got his high school athletes to excel, with a dictatorial, all-or-nothing, my-way-or-the-highway approach, that just didn't translate too well with adult runners?

That was a big part of the problem. HS kids, particulary in that era, would listen and do essentially anything the coach told them. That coaching philosophy just wasn't going to work with professional athletes who had been exposed to other coaching greats throughout their careers. The whole situation quickly unraveled.
