except that he actually once ran a 1:46 for the last 800m of a 1500m (in Athens) which presumably means he could have even done somewhat faster than that if he was only running an 800m.

Wariners 400m best is 43.45 so even at his peak training for the 800 he would be a 44 sec runner. Rudisha runs 44 low in world record shape.
Fascinating reasoning. Wariner's 400m PR is 2 full seconds better than Rudisha's, yet you have somehow convinced yourself that Rudisha is the better 400m runner. Interesting.
Btw, I'm not saying Wariner would beat Rudisha in the 800m. That would be equally ridiculous.
You have a comprehension problem. I stated that currently Wariner is running 45.xx. Rudisha runs 45.xx early season whilst training for the 800m. I made the statement that currently training for the 200/400m if Wariner is only managing the same times as Rudisha in his base period he will in fact be far slower over the 400m than Rudisha if he were to train for the 800m. I then went further to suggest that at his peak of 43.45sec if he had switched to the 800m he would be in the low 44's due to the extra mileage and I doubt he would in fact be too much faster than World Record shape Rudisha over a 400m. The key point to comprehend is "If they were both training for the 800m"

El G ran 1:46 for the final 800m split in Athens 1500m final.
El G at the time was in 1:43.xx shape certainly. But he was too focused on 1500m and eventually 5000m

Wariner has a long shot but he should go for it. There are currently two americans approaching the national record. Three would make for quite the race.
