RE: Galen Rupp runs 145 miles a week

I would love to still be running 90 miles a week and running 14:30 like I did in college. But guess what I was an average 4:35 miler in high school, I have student loans to pay back, a car payment on a car that sucks, insurance, a cell phone, cable/internet, water, gas, electric...

Galen works his ass off but to say that I didn't work as hard as him or even put in the same effort is crap because that demeans anything any of us did in college because we didn't win the the Genetic Lottery like him.

I love Galen and he makes me feel like all of the times I had some east African blow my doors off over the last 400m wasn't pointless. Finally some white guy on the world stage broke through. Quit hating on him

Rupp trains harder than any other American ever over the longest stretch.

Shorter ran 140 miles a week and other than his track sessions ran 7:00 pace to handle the volume. Same with Rodgers.

I say Pre's workouts for an entire year and a 13:30 5000 man could have no problem with the majority but they would be stretching it.

Kennedy trained pretty hard. No easy running and was up to 140 miles a week only in his late 20's but was doing a lot of ladders with short recovery year round. Especially when when he trained with the Kenyans.

Pat Porter trained at altitude was one of those guys that never ran slow but he never worked on speed and for a 10,000 runner that stuff isn't fun.

Runners are limited by talent and their ability to recover as to how hard they can train day in and day out.

It's really a shame to condense Rodgers' training down to a few words when he wrote down so much of it for us. He goes into greater detail on his day to day training but his weekly mileage figures give you a good starting idea of what he was doing.

Ummm, WhatYo, that may have been your experience, but I don't think it reflects reality. I came up running about the same time - I graduated HS in 1989. My team wasn't particularly good, but we all ran more than 15-30. I'd guess 30-40, and the guys who went on to run in college (myself and a few teammates) probably ran more than that. My teammates in college (a decent div III program) generally ran more than I did. This was 1989-93. As to the comment about tempo runs. Tempo runs have been around forever, just not called tempo runs. They were just called hard runs - you'd go fast. Steve Jones, when asked how long his tempo runs were, said, "I have no idea what a tempo run is." He said, basically, they'd hammer some runs, and others they'd back off.

I think we should discuss the water treadmill as a key factor in his successful training because of the benefits of the water resistance . My form below the waist always benefited greatly from aquajogging, improving leg drive and overall strength.

He does have access to an alter g. Why wouldn't he be using that instead if there wasn't an added benefit of the water resistance
