Also, this Cold War Kids track is good.

Why would you post that? Why do you think we would think that was funny?
As a bass player it's one of the few things I pay attention to. So, are we talking bass as an instrument. Bass melodies/harmonies as key components of as song? Instrumental/generated bass? Most memorable bass lines in pop or rock songs? I can literally think of hundreds of songs with great bass licks, but, again, I pay attention to that element of music. Also, style of music plays a role here. Some forms of music utilize bass but purely as a component to generate the backing sound for more interesting composition (a lot of blues and bluegrass does this). Others push bass to the front, but, it competes with several other instruments for center stage (rock comes to mind). And yet others give bass free reign but it is merely one of many great pieces of the puzzle (jazz particularly with double basses come to mind). I think as a whole a lot of 60/70's R&B/soul has some great bass playing. Think Motown.
John Cougar Mellonhead & Me'Shell Ndegéocello's cover of "Wild Night" by Van Morrison. Me'Shell plays bass - not too shabby for a chick.
For fun,

I find a lot of stuff by both Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon's line ups to be amazing. Still love playing Sledgehammer.
For those inclined to rap I find a Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets and Guru pull some nice samples. Ok, I'll shut up now... Got me thinking about this too much. Where's my bass?
Don't You Want Me by Human League has a great bass line
Well, having seen "ass hold" on letsrun more than once, I thought maybe some of the grammar police crowd would enjoy it. Maybe you had to have been there and known my friend Nick to enjoy it. My favorite current mispronunciations/made up words are "flustrated" and "supposably" but if that stuff doesn't give you a chuckle, c'est la vie.
Wow I just did this.
I went to out, bought 'Double Nickles on the Dime'. Bought a six back of brews. Went outside onto the porch behind my house. Listened to said music while drinking said brews.
It sucked ass. Every second of it made me feel like a raccoon's bowel movement set on fire.
The bass fillet is one cut that prominently features bass.
Anything by Cream. "Badge" definitely stands out.
"What Is Hip?" By Tower of Power.
Interesting side note about this band that all here should be interested in: One of the bassists for Tower of Power was none other that BALCO founder Vitor Conte.
I can't believe there aren't more suggestions for RUSH!
Geddy Lee is the effin' man. He lays it DOWN on Subdivisions. And some sweet synth, too.
Jaco Pastorius "Portrait of Tracy"
Victor Wooten "The Sinister Minister"
James Jamerson (bass) "My Girl" Temptations
Most of the songs the Beatles put out
You can't talk about bass without mentioning those four guys above.
Lots more will come to mind, but these are a good place to start.
I also love Michael Manring a whole lot.
My principal at the school where I work in Detroit got in a car accident. He got run into by a drunk driver who ran a stop sign. It turned out to be James Jamerson. He paid for my principal's car damage in cash so the principal wouldn't call the police to report it.
It was a long time ago. Jamerson needed a couple days to scrape together the dough. My principal trusted him because Jamerson was so nice.

Hilarious! I started this here thread and was wondering if anyone would take it there. Nicely done!
