Maybe I'll be criticized for thinking outside the box, but I don't doubt that Metcalf has had some success (in the form of titles, etc) in women's XC. The problem is that he is also the head coach for the men's XC team, as well as both mens and women's track teams. Both track teams have fallen near the bottom of the Pac-10 during his tenure despite a good pool of local talent.
That, combined with his Bs and use car salesman-like persona just make me wonder how he has held onto his job. There is no true jumps coach at the school (other than the great pole vault coach), the throws are underserved, and the sprints will never be able to recruit in that weather. Only a few of the XC runners are healthy come track season, so the track team is in shambles. Some changes need to be made at the top of that program.
