Molly Huddle Runs 14:51 - where the hell did that come from?

Guys some of you are fools. It isn't a surprise that a 10 min two miler in High school can run 14:51. D2 Coaches get guys to do that all the time over 4 years.

The question you should be asking is why the hell did she not run that time sooner? The answer is the coaching at Notre Dame is mediocre at best. As it is at many D1's.

Oh ok. Gotcha. So then, when can we be expecting Caitlin Chock's 14:51? Katelyn Kaltenbach beat her back in the day, that means she should have AR by now, right? How 'bout Nicole Blood? I guess cracking the top 3 all-time 5k list is a given for Emily Sisson and Jordan Hasay too? Megan Goethals is a shoe-in for one of the greatest American females of all time? Amber Trotter was dropping 10:20's in early season time trials before she was injured back in HS, shouldn't she be breaking 15 any day now? Ashley Brasovan's 10:12 should equate to what, a guarenteed 15:05, right? Or go with guys - who will drop a sub 13:10 5k first, Ken Cormier or Matt Withrow?

Stop pretending like success in high school leads to success as a professional. Shadrack Kiptoo, Ben True, Chris Barnicle, the Mercados just off the top of my head - all pretty good runners in HS who went to be pretty damn good in college, but we're not mentioning them in the same breath as Rupp, Teg, and Solinsky. Bodies change, not everyone has as much untapped talent.

The point is, while it may be more likely for a junior stud to drop a time like this, 14:51 for an American woman is ridiculously good. No matter her past, it is suprising. In a good way. In my opinion.

"South of the Border" wasn't trying to say that high school success always leads to success as a professional. He was saying the reverse- those who have become successful professionals usually also had successful high school campaigns. He was simply saying, given the talent Molly Huddle displayed in High School, her 5k performance should not have been surprising.

Huddle doubled back (maybe one of the best doubles ever)the evening after the HS-Record of 10:01 when she was beaten by the fresh Kaltenbach. What did Katelyn Kaltenbach ever run again for a mile or any other distance? Molly was 4th at FL XC; none of the women in front of her at FL that season are not running at a competitive level at all now.

Molly has had a long line of fine performances dating back to the indoor season of 2002. It may be that she has slightly flown under the radar screen for some of you, but those who have watched her progression from the HS to world class have watched with pride.

I say good for Molly & good for USA running, she has represented well on all levels for the last 8 years.

You poor sots trying to "read the tea leaves" on the "progression" of dopers crack me up.

To be eligible for a USATF athlete biography, an athlete must:

Be ranked in the top 5 in the U.S. for the previous calendar year by Track & Field News, provided that his/her event has at least five athletes ranked in the top 25 in the world; OR

Be ranked in the top 3 in the U.S. by Track & Field News if his/her event does not have 5 athletes in the top 25 in the world; OR

If not ranked in the top 5, have spent the previous year out of competition due to injury, pregnancy or other circumstances; have a high media interest; be a current or recent U.S. champion competing at the World/Olympic level; be a World Outdoor or Olympic Team USA member in the current year, competing at a high level; or compete in an event where the U.S. is inordinately strong (men's 110m hurdles and dashes); AND

Not be the subject of anti-doping disciplinary action that could result in suspension.
