It's not about disrespecting Goucher - the guy has had a magnificent career. It's that he's running his mouth and publically stating HUGE goals with no recent results to back up the magnitude of these goals.

I applaud him and give him much respect for not throwing in the towel given all the injuries and setback he's had over the last few years. But keeping these high hopes internal or just amongst the Goucher camp was probably the wise move here. He looks like a delusional, pompous baffoon now.

You idea about Goucher is correct, but your recollection of Lopes is not.

He was silver medallist in '76 (age 29). Running away from Brendan Foster and everyone else except Viren. He won the WCCC that year a few months before Montreal. He was second the next year. He was injured for Moscow Games.

He had sub-29 times in 1977-1978-1979 and 1981 I believe and then rejoined the world's best in '82 and was among the all-time top-5 in the world after '82,'83 and '84.

So his time at the top of 10,000/XC spanned 10 yrs and was not so much an on/off affair as some people say.

The irony on this thread is pretty rich. A bunch of letsrunners saying that a guy runs his mouth too much and needs to shut up.

At 35, you'd think he could give a more measured interview. I met Adam at the Boston Marathon expo last year. Really nice guy and clearly fired up about getting back to running. But this interview, portrays him like a trash talking 20 year old. Middle finger? Seriously? You're 35 years old. I wish him all the best and do think he has a shot at qualifying but if any of my 35 year old friends said this kind of stuff I would think they really needed to grow up. Not a great interview for a guy I have a lot of respect for.

Goucher sure said some crazy things in that interview. However, dreaming big is what running is all about. He has the talent to achieve these dreams and knows it.

I think it's awesome that someone who is handicapped with thyroid and asthma issues (who trains with women who have to take Viagra!) can continue to run at 35. Good for him to fight through all these medical conditions!

I wonder what the average number of TUEs is for an Al-Sal athlete? 4? 7? You'd think WADA would notice that a group of elite athletes are all practically cripples...

I love goucher's fire but if he actually pulls off a decent marathon time (2:10 or better), let alone makes the olympic team, I would be really shocked. He talks all about being a new mindset and not getting injured but then he says he couldn't run Houston because he wanted to have 2-3 months of injury and interruption free training and he is "well on his way to that".

Adam is a good guy and a good runner. You have to be at least a little OCD to succeed in running in the first place, so of course he is a very driven person. Having to deal with injuries is tough and can get depressing when it seems like you're never going to run normal again. It has got to be tougher yet, when you have a bunch of people on LetsRun saying that you're washed up again and again. It has probably been a real test for him to stick with it and believe that he still has the potential to run well.

Are there people out there that he can prove wrong? Yes, just take a look at the Letsrun.com message boards.

I don't understand why people need to be so negative though. He has put a statement out there. Give him the chance to make good on it. If not, and it makes you feel better to bitch about Adam because your life is that pathetic, then go ahead and let the bitching begin bitches. He's still better than you.

He says it because he knows he'll be able to back it up. He knows AlSal will "train him the same way" he "trained" Ritz to get him to 12:56.

Hasn't Goucher been with AlSal through the last few years injuries? If so, he may be the best argument that AlSal's athletes are legit.

That's the point, it was more than a statement about making a comback, it was a "here's my middle finger" statement. Like I said previously, it was a good interview minus that statement. He was honest in a lot of ways, such as admitting his wife's success/income has allowed him to stay in the sport. In fact, he apparently had his own doubts about his career after '08. Some of us simply don't like that one statement. Some like that type of bravado, but like it or not, he also opens himself up to some criticism with that kind of talk. And it has nothing to do with what you perceive as a "pathetic" life or that "he's still better than you."

I'd like to see him come back and run well. I too would rather listen to him than to these other guys who keep rambling about running for the "glory of God". We need a few more guys with a little more attitude. Guys who say that they're going to kick some ass and then go out there and do it. I wish Adam all the best and I'll be one of the people rooting for him.
