But how has everyone forgotten Wake Forest? Top 30 on US News. The place is a phenomenal education, and the women's team has been stellar in recent years (OK not this year, but very recently and under the same head coach).
Ya I'm glad someone mentioned the UAA. Not only is it one of the premier athletic conferences for DIII xc and track, but also arguably the best academic conference in all of NCAA (other than the Ivy) hosting schools like WashU, CMU, NYU, Emory, UChicago.
But the OP asked about D1 schools. DIII has many stellar academic schools also, though, so don't take that as me bashing in any way. The UAA is amazing academically.

You have to give more information for a good answer.
1) you aren't going to want to relocate to anywhere in the country.
2) If you don't want ivy league/duke/stanford.. the best running/academic school combination is probably Georgetown. But, if your major is going to be painting.. or another "different" subject.. then no academic ranking will do any good for you, and you'll need to do that research for yourself.
3) I'm biased toward UVA; go to UVA.

georgia tech, wake forest, etc. are just not in the same class as the other schools listed. they're not bad schools. they're just not elite. they're not top 25.
will you get a good education? yes. but OP asked for the best. georgia tech isn't in that group.

For engineering, you can't beat GT. So, it depends on what you are talking about. For instance, Pitt, is not well known for many academics in the world outside of it itself. However, if you are going to med school or want to be a psych major, it's tops.
Marine Biology? Look at Florida U, and U of San Diego. They are great. So, it all depends on your major, or interest. Rogets has a great reference book they come out with every year. It's about $20 and gives rankings for each major.

You obviously know nothing about UF's admissions over the past decade and a half. Unreal GPAs and test scores. UF is a top 50 research institution. Is it Harvard? No. But it is most certainly NOT a Clumpson or Hickansas or West Virgin-sister-lookin-good University.

Does the quality of your response indicate that you attend a "prestigious" school? If so, I think I've made my point.
Why do we get this inane poll about once a month? The very description of "best Academic D-1 school" is suspect. Where do these ratings come from and what are they based on? First off, the source is almosts always the US News and World Report annual list. This list is contrived first off to sell magazines. Secondly, the rankings are primarily based on graduate schools and research programs. Pray tell, what is the relevence of this to any young collegiate runner--who is not yet into research, and is not in grad school. If you are thinking of going to get a decent undergrad education, you need to look no further than class size, and size of the university. A huge mega-university is not going to be a good fit for most undergrads (unless you want a cookie cutter, mundane education). The Ivy League and top reasearch universities are a good fit if you are into NIH type research and are already moving in circles with the rich and famous. Otherwise, you are wasting your time in an arrogant school with arrogant classmates, but very little practical education for a middle class kid. For those knocking the Arkansas, Louisiana and Oregon populace-type schools, you are missing the boat and don't understand our education system at all. These schools offer excellent programs of education for any kid wanting to put in the work, and at a fraction of the price. The thousands of successful alumns of these schools will confirm this.
Colgate's pretty competitive. Good luck getting in though. 3.8 over 1400 or 32 and you're 50/50

I believe that the difference in the quality of education you get between most state universities and that of the elite schools (including the Ivy Leagues)is vastly overstated. Let's say that one person obtains a master's degree in economics from Harvard and another person gets the same degree at the University of Tennessee, just as an example. Both students will have spent their time learning the same principles and concepts. Both will have been taught by qualified instructors and will have had to demonstrate the same level of competency in order to obtain their degrees. The only advantage to going to Harvard would be that you might be more likely to have had a class or two under a professor who has been nominated for (or even won)a Pulitzer or a Nobel Prize. There may be some advantage in this as to facilitating the learning process, but I assume that it would be negligible since all education at this level is really self-education anyway.
Also, just because a university does not have a highly exclusively admissions standard does not mean that it is not a good school. This has nothing to do with the level of instruction. There is no "No Child Left Behind" legislation forcing state universities to water down their instruction the way it is at the high school level. Average high school students can get into these universities, but it is pretty much sink or swim on their part from there on out. And sadly, most of them are so ill-prepared from having been coddled in High school that they actually sink.
Pretty good analysis, except that you didn't mention that many of the Ivy League types are coddled from the time of their birth "with the silver spoon", until their "favored admission" due to daddy's money. The difference is that State Universities have to filter out their students; whereas Ivy League schools rarely sink a student.

you'll get some great profs, at least after your freshman year, at any of those big state schools, because they are research institutions and that means a 2-2 teaching load, grad students to grade big intro classes, so lots of time to do research and be on the cutting edge of fields. Plus, a lot of the faculty will be from top schools. It is not easy to get one of those jobs.
