I don't normally post on Letsrun, I usually just read it for entertainment, but this thread is the precise reason I don't allow our athletes to post on here. I'm sure by commenting I will be subjecting myself and our own team to criticism, as well, but even so, I feel the need to voice my opinion on this ridiculous thread. I can only hope that it was started in sarcasm and not sincerity.
I don't understand why people have to "hate" other teams. If anyone has a reason to "hate" Lynchburg, it should be me, given that we have finished 2nd to them the last two years in the ODAC XC Championships, including by a mere 2 point margin in 2008. But I do NOT hate Lynchburg. I think quite highly of them actually, and why wouldn't anyone, given their success? They didn't do it with luck.
As a North Central College alumnus, i was taught to respect tradition, which is what I have towards Lynchburg: respect. I've only known Dr. Toms for six years, but I would safely bet that it took a tremendous amount of work to build the program to the level it is and has been for many years. As someone trying to do the same, I respect how difficult it is.
North Central put one of the best D-3 teams in history on the course today and Ricky Flynn flat out destroyed everyone from every school. Even though I coach at a rival college, I am not ashamed to say that I was screaming my head off for Ricky because it is good for the ODAC and it is good for the South Region. I yelled equally as loud for every other South Region runner that I spotted in both the men and women's races. It is in everyone's best interest for other teams in their conference and region to do well.
It raises the level of performance for everyone. I know it certainly does for our team. If we want to beat Lynchburg, we have to work harder to do it, and by them being good, it makes us better. The same could be said for any good schools in the conference or region.
I hope they continue to be good and that the ODAC and the South Region continue to get better. When the time comes that our team is fortunate enough to win, it will be more satisfying to beat a good team than to beat weak teams. Where's the pride in beating teams that aren't good?
I feel fortunate to have a good relationship with many rival coaches in the ODAC and the region. Several are relationships I value very highly. It is quite possible to have "friendly" competition. Teams (both coaches and athletes) can be friends and still have a deep desire to beat each other. "Hate" is not a necessary ingredient to success.
Kevin Peggs is spot-on when he said that if you are bitter towards Lynchburg for being good, then use it as motivation to work harder. And if you want your own team to be respected, show respect to other teams and try to understand that it's good for the conference and the region for every team to do as well as possible. You should have as much pride in your conference and your region as you do in your school and your team. It's all part of a bigger picture.
