Billy Sheehan - Mr Big. His solo stuff is awesome
Mick Karn.
Never heard of him?
Go search some youtube vids.
The guy has monster skills.
Inspired by Jaco, but also just does impossible things.
An explorer was down in the bush with his guide in a canoe. As they made their way further into the jungle, the explorer became startled as drum beats began thundering through the forest.
"Drum beats very very very bad," said the guide. "We must escape before drums end. Hurry!"
As the explorer and the guidesman began rowing faster, the the explorer began worrying about the beats, wondering what on earth they could mean. His anxiety only got worse as the beats not only continued upabated, but sped up. Suddenly, the beats stopped.
Terrified, the explorer squeaked out, "What happens now?"
The guidesdman, wide eyed and shaking, looked at the explorer and said,
"Bass solo."

Need to make sure all styles are represented.
Israel Cachao Valdes
Could very well be credited with inventing the mambo. Nearly 80 years performing with all of the greats. Always played with a bow in hand, which added depth to his solos. Greatest latin jazz bassist of all time.
Are you serious?!
Sting.
End of thread.
FLAGPOLE!!!
Sting? That's your idea of a great bass player? Maybe a great song writer, I will grant, but he cannot hold a candle to most of the people listed here. And I like him, but still.
I can't believe McCartney has not been mentioned. His bass playing was revolutionary...at least so far as pop, rock, etc. Any bass player will tell you that.
Meshell Ndegocello is very talented
Jazz fans: Paul Chambers on bass; see "Cooking", "Relaxing" and "Working"..... with the the Miles Davis quartet.
Rock & Roll:
John Paul Jones
Geddy Lee
Flea
Entwistle
the guy from the Pretenders
Frank Beard
Jaco, far and away (Pure innovation...such a tragic end, though), with Entwistle 2nd and Clarke winning the Bronze.
No one has mentioned Lee Sklar.
