Between 5-25 percent of children and teenagers in the United States are obese (Dietz, 1983). As with adults, the prevalence of obesity in the young varies by ethnic group. It is estimated that 5-7 percent of White and Black children are obese, while 12 percent of Hispanic boys and 19 percent of Hispanic girls are obese (Office of Maternal and Child Health, 1989).

Some data indicate that obesity among children is on the increase. The second National Children and Youth Fitness Study found 6-9 year olds to have thicker skinfolds than their counterparts in the 1960s (Ross & Pate, 1987). During the same period, others documented a 54 percent increase in the prevalence of obesity among 6-11 year olds (Gortmaker, Dietz, Sobol, & Wehler, 1987).

Yes we are.

The problem is not the bus stops or the parents driving their kids to those bus stops but the lack of time these parents (Fathers) put into their child's life. Most kids are not willing to put themselves through discomfort for greater gain. The football team wont tackle in practice for fear of getting hurt, thus in the games they miss tackles. My XC team get gets coming out for PE credit and then whine when they are told the workout. Um this is a running team.

The few who push themselves and try are the varsity, the rest what I call fitness runners. I even had one parent tell me that their child would spend 8 hours a day over the summer playing video games. "He wants to get to the next level."

My response, "yeah that is the same in running too."

C'mon. Are we seriously arguing that you believe your kids are not obese and that there is no problem? What town is that?

Kids are fat. Fatter today than yesterday.

They have the video games we did not.

The big question is; What is the state of our country's health going to be in 25 years? 45 years?
