Fernandez reminds me a lot of Ritz. Highly talented but also highly ethereal. Whether or not he will suffer a similar period of extended injuries, is yet to be seen. . . Some of the most precocious talents have always had to flirt with the thin line between very fit and injured. Hopefully the guys at OSU are bringing German back slowly from injuries and allowing full recovery (and hopefully German is being honest with himself and waiting till he's truly healthy).
If he's had inconsistent training thus far I'd guess he's just not in decent shape, and I'm sure Chili Pepper hurt--even for somebody with his natural ability. However, I don't think that's reason to think he's suddenly out of contention for the National crown. If anything, they should bring him back slowly, building base, underracing him, and cultivating that aerobic engine. Throw in the occasional hard tempos, threshold runs and what not, and he's ready to roll. Remember the guy's got great natural strength; afterall, he ran arguably the toughest test of aerobic and anaerobic strength--the mile--in 3:56 for his first indoor race ever. Allegedly this was coming off of xc fitness only.
As for GF winning the crown, it would be tough. . . but if he's in the mix with 400 to go (and this would mean him being selfish for once) you've gotta believe he's gonna bust it out just like he did at National's 1500m. Let's review the contenders:
Chelanga said his training is behind.
Derrick looked great in his victory, he's fit, but will he peak at the right time?
GF looked haggard. Can he pull the talent and training together in time? He is a workhorse after all.
Puskedra. . . Puskedra is a great runner, but he's not going to win this year or in the 2 years following it. He's just not at the same level. You saw the way German dispensed him at Nike Nationals in the 2-mile, don't kid yourselves.

Nah, German's clearly better. This isn't even worth disputing... it's stupid. If you read the article from Stillwater, you would know that he wasn't running consistently for 2 months due to nagging injuries. TWO MONTHS. That's 8 weeks, chief. That's the majority of the summer. That means when Derrick and Puskedra were cranking mid-summer tempos, GF was chillin, probly throwin back Natties and takin drags of the stanky stank. Its like he is a battleship with 100 guns built on board, the most and best guns ever created. Then he gets hurt and misses training. So he goes into battle with tarps covering say 25 of his guns and only firing away with 75 guns. His greatest enemies only have 85 built on board but they are always blazing away with 82. Seems its easier for German to repair the guns that he needs for the track, mile, 1500 etc faster. However, the 10000 CC takes longer time to take those tarps off those particular guns. Derrick is very strong and firing on everything. Love to see German get out there at 100%. I do hope I am wrong. Sorry for the idiotic post.
What championships have been awarded yet? After they had out the big awards there may be room for discussion but right now it's just a lot of hot air.

No, I don't think he is forgotten. In fact, I think that he is the key man for OK State's chances at Nats.
Colby's having a great season so far. But he clearly is not in the same league as Puskedra, Derrick and Fernandez. That isn't knocking him. I just think he is in the second tier of sophs with Estrada, Heath... Great runner and I wish him the best.

But, you are not the first to predict GF for the win. Lots of folks here think he'll take it and some posted to that effect as far back as June.

Again, it's part of HIS schedule. HE is at the level where national/world championships are a priority.
He went 13:25 at the most important race of the season (USA 5K championships - 5th place - 18 years old). He was only about a month removed from injury when he went 13:31 (2 seconds behind Derrick, who clearly ran the race of his season) at the Stanford time trial. This was also about a month after beating Derrick over 8K for the second time in as many tries (USA CC and World CC).

Ridiculous. German could certainly win, but 23 seconds? Chelanga doesn't lose to anyone by 23 seconds. If German wins it will be in a kick down the final straight by no more than 5 seconds.
