I never liked the guy to begin with, for his appearance, the way he carries himself on the track... whatever. When it comes to his running, I want him to win a world championship someday and run world leaders just as much as his biggest fans out there. Great runners PUSH the sport to new heights... you know, I just don't see him doing that. He's been running this year as if he were the favorite for something... NCAA and USAs doesn't count as big meets in my book, bc of his level. All that being said:

You guys do realize that Bekele wins races in 27 flat. I believe the Olympic 10k in 2004 was won in around 27:02. That's a lot further off of his PR than Rupp ran last night. Were you guys all giving Lagat shit at the 2007 WC when he sat and kicked on a 5k that went out well slower than his ability showed he could run, no because he won and you all would have sounded dumb. But, somehow it's okay to rag on Rupp when he does it. And when I listen to him talk I laugh because I feel like I'm listening to someone who is about 14, but I still realize that he is by far the class of the 10k in the US for the years to come. So, instead of bitching about how he runs, why don't we get behind him a little more and hope that he surprises us and makes a race of it in Berlin.

So this is his 3rd 10,000 this year with at least one more to go and he is coming off of a recent 5/10 double not to mention all the other fast races.

It doesn't make sense to push this race any more than he had to. He was lucky to get through it healthy.

Next USA Championship it will probably be his first 10,000 of the year and he can run a different tactic.

I find it ironic that Rupp is being picked on for "just" winning races now, when 1 year ago he was picked on for the exact opposite reason being a second rate give -it -your all for second place....

So Bolt show boating the last part of a 100 or 200 is not pompous? Seems like he is pretty well loved by everyone. Both Rupp and Bolt run tactics that indicate that they are the ones to beat and you are going to either have to do something drastic to beat them.

Rupp could have dropped Ritz at anytime he wanted to. Ritz should feel lucky that instead of being demoralized with 5K to go he got pushed until 500 to go. In the end they both ran good races, both could have ran faster, but that would not have changed the end result.

The fact that this thread includes names like Bekele, Sihine, Kogo, Lagat, and other greats in the same breath as Rupp only affirms Rupp's ability and potential. The folks who "hate" him are simply jealous that he's had the opportunities he's had to maximize his talent. Hate him or love him, the thing that has impressed me the most this year (going back to cross) isn't his times, it's his being incredibly race-savvy. He has finally learned how to RACE and not just run fast; makes me anxious to see him in Europe.

Not one person who supposedly dislike him would refuse the amenities, sponsorship, facilities, personlized physicians/athletic trainers, private coaching, trips to Europe, wood-chipped trails, etc, etc afforded to him during his young career. If this is what it takes for the US to close the gap on the Africans, shit, it may take all of that. We can't continue this hypocritical slashes at a kid who is apparently doing everything possible to close that gap. I can't stand it either (the running luxuries), but only because I'm admittedly jealous that I didn't/don't have it. Just puttin it out there.

Look this ain't a time trial, it's a race! The point is to win. You guys are rediculous. If he was a kenyan "Galen Chelimo" you'd be cumming on yourself yapping about what a smart race he ran and how dumb American distance runners are for leading too early.

Why should Rupp lead? This was a CHAMPIONSHIP race, so the point is to WIN in any way you can. For Galen, this meant running third most of the way and kicking with 500m to go.

Ritz took the lead and pushed the pace with 64s because he knew he could not outkick Rupp. Thus, for Ritz, leading was the only way to have a chance to win the championship. It absolutely baffles me why people would expect someone with a great kick to lead in a championship. That's not manly, it is just plain stupid. Not to mention the workload that he has put in this year as far as races. He has raced so much more than any other elite distance runner in the country.

Rupp has progressed amazingly well. It really wasn't that long ago people said he'd never win, he didn't have the speed, etc. He has developed into such a mature runner, and he looked so smooth and relaxed last night, even as the pace accelerated. His kick used to be bad, then it was good, and now it's downright nasty.

Great race. There is no question who the class of the USA is at 10,000m right now.

I agree and all of these guys who are talking about the Africans have obviously not watched many world championship 10k races. Bekele often sits on people just like Rupp did. Geb used to sit on people too. And they never go near PRs in championships.

And, by the logic of this board, Sihine should be telling KB to F-- off (any 10000) and Choge should tell Kipropr to F--- off. (Olympic 1500)

your 100 v 10000 argument is bunk because there is no pacing involved in a 100. it is stupid not to go all out the whole time. obviously in the 10k, you have to conserve energy throughout the race. I find it annoying when people talk about pacing the 10k as if people have a responsibility to lead for a few laps. the point of the race is to win. the time is unimportant, so taking the lead and pushing hard in the middle of the race is pointless unless that is the best way for one to win (if you have no kick). since Rupp can kick better than most, it is beneficial to him if the race goes relatively slowly for the first 9500m.

V6, racing is not friendly by nature. it is great when athletes are cordial and polite to each other, but once the gun fires, there are no manners. Just the way it is.

I took it as classless on Rupp's part. Granted I will never come anywhere near as fast as Rupp, but I also have hair on my chest and I don't think he can claim the same feat. Back on topic though, I hate those types of guys. It is just likea few years ago, Webb did the 5K at the Penn Relays and just sat and kicked. I think some people started heckling him towards the end for being soft.
