Considering german is rumored to be redshirting outdoors, how do you figure? Even if not, and if this thing about rupp is true, it gives german indoors and outdoors next year (where he might be healthier than now) to race Rupp. Lastly, Rupp has no reason to duck german, which is why he already gave german 3 NCAA chances to race him. Theoretically German should have a bigger jump next year (freshman to sophomore transition vs. just another year older for rupp).

Shawn Forrest just ran 13:28 which shows why he could give Chelanga such a close run.

7:48 isn't a "good" time, it is the 2nd fastest ever behind only Goucher's classic win over Lagat in 7:46. Coe had already run a 7:48, and the way Rupp ran that race, breaking him the first 600m, and then celebrating the last 600m, and still running that fast off a triple is freaking amazing.

Again ignorance, 13:41 isn't slow for an indoor NCAA 5000m, and it was a historic as a duel between the two fastest indoor collegians ever. Chelanga had already failed to outkick Rupp off a CR/AR pace, so he tried it off a slower one, and got demolished over the last 800m with Rupp gaining 3 seconds on him even after backing off.

Ulrey had a lead, Ulrey had the faster indoor mile PR, 3:57.6 versus 3:57.86, and most thought he had the faster kick yet Rupp dropped him with 54 last lap by .75. 54 last 400m indoors is smoking.

Do I credit Rupp for getting his medals? Well done, man. But I wasn't really blown away by any single race.

Hopefully just a rumor, he doesn't need more NCAA titles/records, he's already made the Hall of Fame.

I guess you've successfully stated your opinion. We agree to disagree about the merit of his performance at indoor nationals. However, to clarify why I think redshirting is good idea, it has nothing to do with next year's collegiate season, but everything with running international races this year. He doesn't need any more NCAA titles. You are right. So why run nationals this year? maybe he'll run 13:20 and 28:10 is he's pushed, and my response will be precisely, "meh."

i believe his first full year at oregon. he started in track of 2005? and then I think the next year he ran cross, indoor track and outdoor track and then cross again in 2006 before redshirting indoors but doing outdoors in 2007 and still making the world team in the 10K that summer.

so I think he had 5 consecutive seasons in there a few years back.

Oregon's best chance at an outdoor title is this year. Who knows what'll happen next year. Everything is aligned for them to win (new star javelin thrower, Klech, decathlete, etc). If they wait until next year they're tempting fate.

Besides, on what grounds would Rupp be eligible for another red-shirt year?

"Since he qualified for the Olympic team in 2008, he can actually get an activities waiver for the 2008 season which would extend his 5 year clock to 6 years. It is essentially the same rule that allows some international athletes a 6th year.

So, not sure if this rumor is true or not, but he could technically use activities waiver for 2008, redshirt 2009 and be a senior at Oregon Spring 2010.

From the NCAA Manual:

Extensions of the five-year period of eligibility for

student-athletes...shall be based on the following criteria: The member institution in which the student-athlete is enrolled must establish to the satisfaction of the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement (by bjective evidence) that the student-athlete was unable to participate in intercollegiate athletics as a result of participation in one of the activities listed in the above legislation for a specific period of time. Further, such an extension shall be limited to one time and for a period not to exceed one year per student-athlete, per sport.

The activities "listed above" were World Champs, World Cup, World Students, Pan Am or Olympics Games."

Yes, unless he trade running ncaa's in fayatnam for eugene and if it was his legal right to do so.

I still don't think this IS happening, but wouldn't blame him if he could.

For me there are only two issues:

1) Money. Can he and his family afford another year of waiting for the big cash? Is so then ok.

2) NCAA Rules. Is this really permitted. If so then ok.

Since it would actually work better into the summer running plans for 2009 and 2010 the it would be a great idea. Like someone else said, he has indoors next year anyway if he wants to stick around.

Rupp just made some major advancements by working out with Wheating, Centro, Acosta and company on speed. Not sure why he should rush away from it.

I feel like everyone already knows this, but I'll repeat it again...Nike has agreed to basically 'back-pay' Rupp for his time at the University of Oregon as if he were a Nike athlete.

Since it's a verbal agreement (Rupp hasn't signed anything with Nike or an agent), it doesn't literally break NCAA rules. Again, Nike loves him running in an Oregon jersey, and they've done this type of agreement on other occasions (including track and field).

Good assessment, no way Rupp will not benefit well from a decision to prolong any time spent at Oregon.

On the other hand, Oregon probably doesn't want him running the National and the World meets, since he's on a Nike scholarship to win those valuable college races for them.

Damn, he could use his last season of eligibility next year for indoors AND (if waivers work) have a fourth season of outdoors?! Crazy.

Also, he has done two school years with all three seasons:

05-06 and 06-07

I think fall of '05 was when he hurt his ankle.

With another year, he might run faster than Rono's 27:22, or surpass Nenow's "American" record of 27:20. Even the record for whomever has a US passport best of 27:13 by the UCLA alumni.

Then again, the triple crown is looking good for the Ducks.

THey can still go for the record....although i don't believe they are going for any kind of world record at all. It's either collegiate record (Which would not count if he ran) or American record, which would count if he ran even if he was redshirting and kiptoo did not. As long as his other teamates don't wear the Oregon Jersey i assume it's ok.
