For all you jealous wannabe's. Here is Galen Rupp's bio, pretty impressive for a collegiate who is, by the way, and Olympian by virtue of finishing first of all native born Americans in the 10K at the recent Olympic Trials. As you can see, he has set his share of records and won his share of races over the years. So, unless you want to denigrate Abdi, I'd say Rupp is pretty good if he could push Abdi up to the final 200 meters of that 10K race, finishing just behind him.
After 2 1/2 collegiate seasons for Ducks, is already a seven-time All-American in track and field and cross country (outdoors - 2; indoors - 4; cross country 1), thanks to two NCAA runner-up 10,000 meters finishes and four more top-six finishes. In the classroom, is a two-time ESPN Magazine First Team Academic All-American and a four-time Pac-10 All-Academic First Team choice. In 2007, became 14th UO men's distance runner to earn a World Championships invitation after his runner-up USA Championships 10,000m finish. His 5,000m / 10,000m doubles in the Pac-10 track and field championships helped UO to team titles in 2005 and '07, and also led squad to its 14th and 15th Pac-10 cross country team victories in the fall of 2006 and '07. Kicked off collegiate career in dramatic fashion in 2005 as the NCAA 10,000m runner-up and top American finisher as a freshman outdoors in '05. That same season, he re-energized Hayward Field with three stirring runs, including a 10,000m U.S. junior record in the 2005 Oregon Twilight. As a sophomore on the oval, became first Duck to claim two indoor All-America honors in NCAA individual events the same season. Owns American collegiate record in the 10,000m (27:33.48) and third-best mark ever among collegians (including foreign-born athletes), along with additional indoor school records in the 3,000m (7:54.19) and 5,000m (13:38.62). Also stands sixth all-time for UO in the outdoor 5,000m (13:30.49). As a prep or freshman, also broke U.S. junior records in the 3,000m (7:49.16), 5,000m (13:37.91) and 10,000m (28:15.52), and the U.S. high school record in the 3,000m (8:03.57). In high school, was coached by former Oregon distance great Alberto Salazar and was a national high school athlete of the year as a senior in '04, junior record holder in the 5,000m (13:37.91), national cross country runner-up in '03, and a five-time state champion (track-3, cross country-2).
Fall 2007: NCAA Runner-up (Cross Country). In second NCAA cross country appearance, challenged for NCAA title the entire distance of the 10,000m race and finished second in the closest NCAA finale in recent memory. That NCAA placing was UO’s highest since Alberto Salazar took second in 1979 and was UO’s fifth-highest ever behind NCAA titles by Steve Prefontaine (3) and Salazar. Won UO’s seventh regional title and UO’s first since 1999. Opened his season with second straight top-two finish in the Pac-10 Championships and ran the 8,000m race with teammate Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott after he started his fall training nearly two months later than his teammates. His hat trick of top-two finishes spurred the nation’s top-ranked team to an undefeated season with titles in the Pac-10, West Regional and NCAA Championships. Pac-10 All-Academi First Team selection.
2006-07: NCAA Runner-up (10,000m) / All-American (3,000m, 5,000m, Cross Country). In cross country, became the 20th Duck to finish top 10 in the NCAA Championships (sixth, 31:03). In weeks prior, claimed UO’s 10th Pac-10 individual title and was named Pac-10 Men’s Cross Country Athlete of Year. Overall, led team in all five of his races with win in Mike Hodges Invitational (23:03.2) and top-five finishes in Bill Dellinger Invitational (second, 23:09.1) and West Regional (fourth, 30:15). Outdoors on track, claimed second NCAA runner-up 10,000m runner-up finish (28:56.19) and led much of the final three laps in bid for victory. A month prior in May, became second-ever Duck Pac-10 5,000m-10,000m champion in same season, and also won West Regional 5,000m (14:08.03). In late April, jumped to seventh all-time in U.S. history in 10,000m (27:33.48) with collegiate season leader that also broke the UO record (27:33.48) formerly held by Bill McChesney, Jr. (27:50.82, 1982). Also ranked fourth among collegians in ’07 outdoors in 5,000m (13:30.49) thanks to stirring stretch run in Oregon Invitational when he won a lean at the finish line over three-time NCAA champion Chris Solinsky of Wisconsin (second, 13:30.54). At season's end, ranked second in the U.S. in the 10,000m (27:33.48) and 15th in the 5,000m (13:30.49), and also 35th in the world in the former event. Indoors, became first Duck to stake four individual All-America honors in his career with his finishes in the NCAA 3,000m and 5,000m (fourth, 7:56.79 / third, 13:40.38). Earlier during indoor season, ran school records in 3,000m and 5,000m and ranked top five nationally among collegians in each (fifth, 7:54.19 / third, 13:38.62). Also ran 1,600m anchor on NCAA provisional qualifying distance medley relay in Alex Wilson Invitational (12th, 9:39.43) that ranks second all-time for UO. Indoors, ranked third in the U.S. and world in the 5,000m (13:38.62), and also 11th among Americans in the 3,000m (7:54.19). ESPN Magazine All-Academic First Team national honoree, and a Pac-10 All-Academic First Team selection in both track and field and cross country. Personal/Season Bests: Outdoors - 5,000m - 13:30.49 (PR), Oregon Invitational, Eugene (4/20/07); 10,000m - 27:33.48 (PR), Cardinal Invitational, Stanford (4/29/07); Indoors - 3,000m - 7:54.19 (PR), Mountain Pacific Championships, Seattle (2/24/07); 5,000m - 13:38.62 (PR), Husky Classic, Seattle (2/10/07).
2005-06: All-American (Indoors 3,000m/5,000m). Outdoors, helped the men’s team try to repeat as the Pac-10 Championships team champions with his second straight top-four Pac-10 double in the 5,000 (third, 14:00.94) and 10,000 meters (30:42.10). Two weeks later, secured his first NCAA outdoor invitation in the 5,000m with his top-five West Regional finish (third, 14:28.33) – three seconds behind the winner. Made NCAA Outdoor Championships debut in 5,000m (20th-prelims, 14:14.02) as he continued to try to recover from a thyroid condition that hampered his training throughout the year. Returned to European circuit in summer for pair of appearances and came away with season bests in 3,000m in Italy (seventh, 7:56.3) and 5,000m in Belgium (sixth, 13:47.04). Altogether ran 10 races outdoors (mile-1; 3,000m-2; 5,000m-6; 10,000m-1). In March, became first Duck to collect All-America honors in two NCAA indoor individual events the same season (3,000m, sixth, 8:07.85; 5,000m, fifth, 13:56.41). Was one of three NCAA indoor scorers for Ducks that helped Oregon repeat best-ever sixth-place NCAA indoor finish as a team. Missed early part of indoor campaign, then ran pair of NCAA automatic times and indoor personal bests in the 3,000m (7:54.90) and 5,000m (13:48.51) the final two weeks of the regular season before his NCAA indoor double on consecutive days - and all four races came in a stretch of 16 days. In fall, after a long summer season racing in North America and Europe, delayed his cross country training build-up several weeks. Debuted in early October in the Willamette Invitational (sixth, 23:58). Raced again two weeks later in Pre-NCAA Invitational (12th, 24:01) in his final race of the fall collegiate season. A foot injury appeared afterwards and prevented him from racing the Pac-10, West Regional and NCAA Championships. First Team ESPN Magazine Academic All-American, and also selected to Pac-10 All-Academic First Team with his 4.05 GPA. Personal/Season Bests: Outdoors – Mile – 4:15.63, Oregon Invitational, Eugene, Ore. 2004-05: All-American (Outdoor 10,000m). Enrolled at University of Oregon during first week of spring classes for outdoor season with pressure of top prep athlete of year honors in 2004. Rose to occasion every race and inspired home crowd on numerous occasions with courage to take lead and chase fast marks against more experienced and decorated competition. Was top Duck finisher in all eight races he ran in his two-month outdoor cycle. In collegiate debut, weathered mid-race fall near 2K to pop back up and run the then-second-fastest 5K of his career in the Oregon Invitational (fifth, 13:50.10) in late April. Followed two weeks later with U.S. 10,000 junior record in Oregon Twilight (first, 28:15.52) that broke the mark of former Duck Rudy Chapa (28:32.76, 1976). In championship slate, helped team to Pac-10 title with top-four finishes against NCAA’s best in the 5,000 (fourth, 13:57.43) and 10,000 (second, 29:28.09). At end of May, chose to race in front of home crowd in West Regional in 5,000 (fifth, 13:59.11), although he ultimately declined an NCAA invite. Two weeks later, led much of the last 2/3 of the NCAA 10,000, en route to a second-place finish (28:23.75) and tied UO’s highest NCAA finish in the event. After collegiate season, finished second by less than a half-second in U.S. Junior Championships 1,500 (3:47.47) after he led the prelims (3:56.89). In summer, opened his European tour with a 1,500/3,000 double at the Einlauf meet in Cuxhaven, Germany on July 9 (10th-3:44.39 PR / 8th-8:04.62). A week later on July 18 broke the U.S. junior record in the 3,000 in small meet in Lignano, Italy in mid-July with his time of 7:49.16 (and bettered the former mark of 7:58.0 owned by former great Gerry Lindgren from 1965). The following week at the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden, Belgium, battled a cold to still run 13:44.72 after he went through the first 3K in 8:03. A week later at the end of July, took fourth in 1,500 in Pan Am Junior Champs in Windsor, Ontario (3:50.96).
