I'm curious:
Do they go gender equity and D1 label and hire the young woman, or does she not have enough experience? Do they go experience (and ignore lack of D1 exp) and hire one of the men? If they offer one of the men, will they be able to pay enough (all have substantial experience)? Why have they waited so long?
If any of the athletes on the team are out there, who would you prefer?
Trust me, experience is the number one thing they look at for a male coach. Only 4 years experience is hardly enough to become head coach as a male would never make it as a finalist.
Maybe its me, but I would have a hard time being coached by a female. It is probably that I have never met a gal who meets the intensity that is required or doesn't end up having drama. But who knows, maybe she will get the group of guys to run fast just because they all want to bone her, who knows.
I run on the UM team and I can tell you from meeting the candidates that my first choice is Arndt-Molis and then Friess. Both seemed very driven and team-oriented and like they would totally kick our asses in a good way. I liked Rita's attitude and that she was really easy to talk to and also that she had some very creative ideas about fundraising and how to get us an indoor track. I liked Friess's training plan a lot, and his experience with strength training and injury management. I would be very pleased with either.
However, I have seen some talk on this board that makes me very uneasy... It's totally lame to be interviewing a possible future coach and thinking in the back of my mind "are they even taking this seriously?" Shame on you guys for badmouthing!

So I take it the two older coaches were not taking it seriously? They must be angling for pay raises at their current schools.
Creative ideas on fundraising to build an indoor track? That's a lot of magazine subscriptions. Good idea though during an interview......show huge vision and get their hopes up big time.

It is very sad that you think our women's team is ugly... you should do some research before you comment on our collective attractiveness. I bet you wouldn't be so harsh if you actually took the time to look at the roster instead of just sticking with the stereotype that all people in Montana are inbred hicks.
I won't go into specifics about my personal bests because I really want to remain somewhat anonymous, but I really am not a what you would call a shitty runner. We have quite a bit of talent (especially on our women's team) we just need a coach who can get us to the big meets. Do some research before you just go running your mouth off, son.
I would have to say that they do appear to have some attractive girls on the team....at least their mugs on their website look that way. I also didn't realize that they do have some pretty good talent on their team. They are better than a lot of teams. How did they attract that Footlocker Finalist from Washington, especially with how good Univ of Washington is these days?

Football will always be king at Colorado, Arkansas, Oregon and Stanford. UM is going to be looking for a coach who can do a lot without money, that is probably why the finalists are from schools with small budgets.

Finally someone posts something on here that actually makes sense! Someone from a big school who has money, resources, and recruits handed to them at will is not going to be able to take over a school like UM. These candidates seem good to me. Without knowing who the rest of the candidates were, I can see how these ones could have become finalists.
There is no way that Anchorage has a small budget. They have to fly to all of their meets and have international athletes. If they are looking for a small budget coach, no chance they get Friess. Friess gets what he wants, and he doesn't want to be a second tier program at a second tier school.

He can train his teams on a new 400 meter indoor track facility when the weather gets rough. He has great assistant coaches, a great budget and a great travel schedule.
He had his best recruiting year ever. Alaska state 3200m champ (9:11), a freshman from Canada (3:55 1500), an Australian (1:50.38 800m), and 2 kenyans (14:30 and 3:54 at 6000ft on a dirt track) On the womens side he recruited a 2:12 800m canadian girl, another talented kenyan girl, and a host of quality alaskan athletes. He as most of his team back from last year including the national champion in the long jump. They will be tough.
Why should he go to Montana?

FOR STARTERS ON WHY FREISS WOULD LEAVE ALASKA:
1. HE APPLIED!!!
2. This is not the first job he has been a finalist for in the past year
3. He obviously wants to leave Anchorage or why would he continually be applying for jobs
I am absolutely floored with the amount of people who have commented on the attractiveness of the female candidate for the job.....and how cute the girls on the team are is a joke right?? These posts cannot possibly be from anyone over the age of 12.
Why should he go to Montana? Because if he can bring in recruiting classes like that for Anchorage just think what he can do recruiting for a D1 school that is not in Alaska! Montana is a lot nicer than Alaska to the ears of a recuit. Same with D1 being better than D2.
If that men's recruiting class is true (I cannot confirm it all), they are bringing in 4 guys who would be top D1 XC runners plus the 800 guy.
If he does this at Montana and can actually coach besides recuit they will be a top team nationally. If he wants to move up the coaching ladder which he probably does since he's applied for other jobs two years in a row, this would be a good start.

While you make good points... you point is from a female perspective, which was my point. Can a female coach males?
I really wish that they would not group the men's and women's teams together. Could you immagine if the men's coach also had to coach the women? It is two seperate jobs that they bunch together. Then these schools refuse to pay for an assistant. Look at Oregon...
I think there should be a female coach for the ladies and a male for the guys.
I don't really think it comes down to a can a female coach males....I think it would come down to can a female convince a 17 year old boy and his daddy that she is a better coach for that 17 year old boy then other males. Hard to recruit would be my guess. But once you agree to go run for a female...then a male athlete should have no disputes over training. The battle is getting the kid there.

Agree, really bad idea. That huge sports dome in Anchorage (the one that Friess is recognized as being a major player in getting built) and UAA's remarkable recruiting year and 2008 track success is way below the standards that Montana seeks.
