I heard that the course is being changed so that we are not too tired for nats. This is just what I heard, so it might be wrong.

wait. no back hills and no cemetary? haha.
that's going to be a fast freaking course then. boring, but fast.
Too tired for nats?
Well better not go to class the week before the meet. Stay in bed. Don't run a step. Gotta keep those legs fresh. If you do need to leave your dorm make one of the JV guys on your team carry you everywhere.
Christ it's one hard five mile run. You're going to have to do it somewhere in NY or NJ to qualify, may as well be at VCP. The course will be in good shape (most of the "trails" are fine gravel which never really gets soggy not matter the weather), and while hilly, VCP really isn't that tough. Plus it's a legendary course that's full of history. Four loops of the grass field and freshman hill...sounds like a blast!
Regions were at VCP in 2001...and the Atlantic did very well for the time (keep in mind the Atlantic was no good in the early 2000s). The two qualifying teams in the top 10, and there was a smattering of All Americans. Both teams outperformed their rankings.
NYU coach, if you read this: KEEP THE 8K COURSE AS IT IS...NO LOOPS!
No doubt that Cortland and NYU are the top two teams but after that I think it will depend on the summer each team has. I don't think Suny G, RIT, or TCNJ are locks for top five spots this year even if they are running well.
In particular I'd like to say watch out for SLU. Our team woke up during our track seasons and don't be surprised to see a lot of guys rack up the prs. We also bost our largest recruiting class in years with a lot of depth in distance runners (most of our incoming runners are typically low mileage 800 guys).
Donohoe was hurt last year and still made it to nationals, moving his way up in the last two miles at regionals. Look for John Ostler to come out with guns blazing after running 15:08 outdoors. We also have a few guys living out west this year at altitude. With a lot of our sophs experienced at running in big meets after last year, we could be a young team running like old-timers.
that kid is garbage he runs like 10 mpw
If you like the regular course, well then go run Iona's invite, or the NYU invite assuming they don't run it the way they plan on setting it up for regionals. Honestly if you have the advatage of a few courses at one location, why not use the one that gives your region the best chance for recovery, or the most similar course to what nationals will be like.
The NYU coach is just being a huge pussy. Run the real coures. If the course is like the one at USATFs then the times will be low 24s which beats up your legs as well. It will be like a track race. Maybe we should just move it onto the armory and have heats. Then our legs will be nice and fresh for nationals which is 7 days away. Why don't we not even bother with a regional meet and just go on rankings so that our legs are as fresh as possible. I'd hate to have to race the month leading up to Nationals. D1 teams race a 10k at regionals then another 10k. Maybe D3 coaches should stop acting like huge pussies. That is the biggest problem wit D3 running. It has nothing to do with the athletes, it is the shallow minded coaches. D3 will always be incredibly inferior if D3 coaches can't stop putting such limitations on their athletes.
I would like to turn this into a D3 should run the 10k but I won't.
By the way I'm a D3 runner, so I'm not bashing because I'm part of it.

The NYU coach must be a huge pussy especially since he usually races his kids agaisnt DI competition throughout a majority of the year.
Why don\'t you get your head out of your ass since you obviously don\'t know what you are talking about
If they change the NYU couse to make it a true pre-regional I'll be pretty pissed. I'm from the Mid-Atlantic region and VCP would probably be the only course I'll run all year with legit hills. The 2K loop course while fast as hell is dull and not a challenge or real XC course at least compared to the normal 5 mile course. Hopefully, this is all rumor and they stick with the other course.
The nyu team's got a championship to win at natty's of course they're going to maximize their chances at winning. Since they do have a chance at winning, changing the course to 2k repeats would be essential as to not blow their legs on the hills. Nevertheless you do not know how vanny can actually affect you post race, calfs are almost always shot for the REST of the week and thus this to me seems like a great idea. In addition, pussiness is not involved at all...it is still an 8k and it is still a race. I think the pussies would be better judged post race. Lastly, the nyu guys have raced van cortland probably at least twice a year so regionals would be their third race there that year, they are not looking out to keep the glory of van cortland because they've already raced it multiple times, neither are they looking to please you with a "traditional" course.
lol well if that was the case then ryan hall is a huge pussy because he didnt fight for the original van cortland course. you know USATF should have just said "f*** it were going to make nationals a 16k instead of 12 and then just make them run two 8k loops because we have the most beastly and non-pussy runners in the world, then they can go into worlds and kick some ass like they do every year...." or because the US already struggles at worlds they make the course a 12k and make it easier so their runners can keep the flow of training and not have to recover after nationals...i think the NYU coach knows what he's doing in terms of the situation, especially because he's probably trying to model it after the USATF course.
I don\'t think Suny G, RIT, or TCNJ are locks for top five spots this year even if they are running well.
TCNJ not a lock for the top 5? please who are you kidding they return everyone from last year...have you not been around the past three years? Lastly, did you not witness the damage that the Atlantic region did last year at Nationals? No doubt the Atlantic region is good but you need to re-evaluate your position my friend
This is all pretty funny since it wouldn't be an issue if the Rochester regional course had been switched from the golf course to the McQuaid course (which it amost was) and would have entailed 4 2k loops. So in the end it doesn't really matter as long as every runner runs the same course.
Anyone know what the course at nationals is like?
I have no idea what course the Regional race will be, but (as one of the posters has said) I think we can count on Nick McDonough to do what he thinks best for his guys--*and for the region*.
I used to follow cross better back in the 1980's and 1990's, when teams from NYS (the old region--realignment added NJ a few years ago) would pretty consistently get beaten up at their Regional qualifiers, which were typically run on hilly courses with bad footing. Meanwhile the teams from another Region (Midwest? or Great Lakes? I forget) usually ran on a mostly-flat course, then went on to rock at Nationals the next week.
Face it: Well over 90% of qualifiers from a Region are going to be the same guys, no matter what the course is like. The only real question is, do those guys go to Nationals beaten up?
As I say, I don't know what McDonough's decision will be. I've been on VCP many times. No question it's a testing course, but it's not the real killer that some seem to think. So I could see the meet being on the "traditional" course, or on a loop course. Either way, I think you can count on Nick and NYU to put on a great meet.
By the way, it wouldn't surprise me if Nick's guys ran mostly a pack race, similar to their UAA win last year. If (and it's a BIG if) they're really head-and-shoulders better than most of the other teams in the Region this fall, I could see their being satisfied with just running to qualify.
Concerned is right...I got a little ahead of myself. What I meant was that they may not end up 3rd. I was at Nationals last year and got a good look, for the sidelines I might ass, at how well Cortland, NYU, and TCNJ ran.
What I was trying to say was that Cortland and NYU are nasty but some other teams in our region could step up near that level if things come together, not just TCNJ.
The NYU Invite will have 4 races on September 15th. A 6k and 8k on the regional loop course. And then 5k and 5mile on the traditional VCP courses.
Teams are free to run whatever race they wish, there will be a number of teams coming in from outside the region to run the traditional races.
The 5k/5mile races will be run in conjunction with the Fordham Invite, but scored seperate.
The Regional Course will be 2 loops of about 3k for women, including cemetary hill, and 3 loops for men, including cemetary hill. (obviously one loop will be only 2k)
No backhills for either race. Course should be challenging to seperate the men from the boys, but not kill those going to NCAA's the next week. It is not the USATF loops? Anyone want to look at that course and answer why that would never work???
Oh yeah, TCNJ will be very good this coming season.
flame away.............
"separate"
"cemetery"
3 loops sounds better than 4 anyway
Going up Cemetary twice would be a lot worse than doing the back hills once.
