60-70 peak mpw? What? I don't think so.
60-70 peak mpw? What? I don't think so.
what? too high, too low?
i really have no idea.
I would say 70-100 mpw. I know that's a big gap, but that is the gap for the top varsity runners on my team. Some can even go 100+ mile weeks. But 60 seems a little low for a "peak" week.
I said 60-70 as the average top weeks during summer. Certainly some will go more but I would guess maybe 70 as the "average" top week.
it all depends. i was all-region and I peaked at about 60 mpw. Other guys on my team were hitting almost double what I did.
I ran for Saint John's back in the day, was all-Region 3 times, and ran 700, 750 and close to 900 miles for the summers; peaking in the low 80s, mid 80s and mid 90s. There were multiple people on my team that ran more than me, and I would guess that the average for most of the guys from other teams (for a peak) was mid 80s.
If you want to be good it is all about the miles.... The Hamline trio of Yotter, Bristow, and Gleason were averaging 95 mpw and running about 1000 a summer.
Guys at SJU put in some huge miles as well. Fermoyle, VanBruggen, and Erichsen all run 100+ miles a week and all easily go over 1000 in the summer. I think last summer VanBruggen had like 1400 miles and Fermoyle was really close behind that.
there were these guys at wartburg, they ran like 285 mile weeks and were well over 3000 miles for the summer...
Not much activity on the Central region thread compared to the other regions.

St. John's Invite Results, Sep 8
1T (1) 28 St. John's (26:04)
3. (9) 88 St. Thomas (27:09)
4. (-) 161 St. Olaf
St. Olaf was just running their freshmen.
Les Duke Invite Results, Sep 8
1. (5) 46 Carleton (27:10)
2. (6) 48 Grinnell (27:11)
St. Olaf Invite Results, Sep 15
7. (2) 254 Wartburg (26:59 2:14:53)
9. (8) 286 Bethel (27:05 2:15:23)
11. (-) 329 St Olaf (27:20 2:16:37)
12. (-) 340 Macalester (27:20 2:16:38)
13. (7) 352 Hamline (27:25 2:17:01)
14. (10) 359 Gustavus Adolphus (27:25 2:17:04)
18. (5) 499 Carleton (28:10 2:20:50)
Carleton ran mostly freshmen, except for, oddly, John Nowinski, who was 65th in 27:08, and #5 runner at Les Duke. Macalester didn't run Burns who was their #2 runner in their previous meet.
So how do they determine whether to invite 4 or 5 teams to nationals? I think I read somewhere that it depends on the performance of the top 5 in the meets prior to regionals. In which case the national ranking polls do matter? Luther, Carleton and Grinnell will be fighting for the 4th spot, as well as Bethel and Macalester. It should be an interesting race.
you are right, the # of invites to nationals depends upon how ranked teams do in races prior to nationals.
Woody Greeno Invite, Sep. 15
5. (3) 179 Nebraska Wesleyan (26:55 2:14:37)
Blugold Open Results, Sep. 21
2. (2) 76 Wartburg (26:49 2:14:01)
3. (-) 134 Macalester (27:10 2:15:49)
4. (9) 135 St. Thomas (27:12 2:15:57)
5. (-) 142 St. Olaf (27:14 2:16:06)
8. (8) 228 Bethel (27:42 2:18:28)
11. (1) 260 St. John's (27:52 2:19:19)
13. (4) 361 Luther (28:29 2:22:21)
St. John's & Luther ran their JV teams. Bethel's Greeno sat out, but even if he'd won they'd only have placed 6th. Wartburg maintains dominance, except there's a 60 second gap between their #4 and 5 runners. It would have been interesting to see how Luther's A team would have compared. Macalester had a great meet with a tight pack, only a 22 second spread between #1 (Burns, who sat out the last meet) and #5. They had a different guy heading the pack in each of their three meets.
Week 1 - Sept. 25

2. Wartburg
3. Nebraska Wesleyan
4. Luther
5. Carleton
6. Grinnell
7. Macalester
8. Bethel
9. St. Thomas
10. St. Olaf
Six teams are currently nationally ranked. In 2006 32 teams competed at nationals rather than 24. Does anyone know if any region ever entered six teams into nationals?
Last year, the rule was that no more than 5 teams per region could go, the 2 automatic and then up to three selected by the committee. The Central is so strong though compared to some of the other regions though so I would say about 90% sure that top 5 at regions will go just like last year.

Luther treating every race up to conference as a tempo run worked for them, and they beat St. John's for 2nd. Nebraska Wesleyan dominated. Chris Erichsen cruised in first the whole way, and picked it up at the end with about a 4:40 mile. He seems ready to gun for top 3 at nationals.
