Running with Dean Karnazes is like free diving with David Blaine.
Sorry Jock Coosteau, didn't see your David Blaine reference above.
Running with Dean Karnazes is like posting on the Let's Run message board with Bemo (It's been done before, and better)
You guys break me up. You have set up a website dedicated to running and you are ragging on Karnaze, who is obviously a dedicated runner and devotee of the sport, because you've never heard of him? Get off the high horse and start paying more attention. Who gives a shit about his pbs anyway. The guy is promoting the running as a sport. Run with it dude.
He is promoting himself (not that there is anything wrong with that) and he is using running to do that.
hey, would anyone be interested in a "I beat Dean Karnazes" shirt?
The guy is also promoting sleep-deprivation, stress fractures (even though he doesn't seem to get them), and excessive-obsessive behavior... oh, and himself.
Most Karno-critics don't have a problem with his running any more than they would have a problem with anyone else running ultras or multiple marathons. It's all his hype and bizarre stunts that make him the laughing stock of the running community.

His activity and our sport are two completely different things. If he wants to promote "cardio" or a healthy life style, that's fine. And I think that's his (somewhat big-headed) intent. But I think it's the media and the general public that should really be getting the thrashing for not being able to tell the difference. I don't think Dean ever really claims to be faster than anyone...and I think that's kind of the point in the SPORT of running. Yeah, some guy could dribble a basketball for 24 straight hours, but I don't think anyone would claim he's playing the sport of basketball...
We just get insulted when people actually think he's participating in our sport and then think that he's actually good at it. Maybe it's Dean's fault for not making a distinction, but I'm not sure it's really his responsibility. I guarantee you there are hundreds of thousands of people out there that could ran as far or farther than Dean, but no one wants to bother. So he likes to be different and he gets meaning out of it. That's fine with me, but it's the inept, ignorant and uninformed media and public who are the real annoyance.
Lighten up.

BULLCRAP.
Its like riding Rojo's uno after a 5th place finish at Heps.
I rest my case, see my post on banning tag in America's school recesses.
"...like artificially inseminating a Chihuahua with the spunk from a Great Dane."
"Like getting tea-bagged by Terrell Owens"
no question dean is a self promoter but he is a very accomplished runner. no he has not won western states but i beleive he\'s finished in the top ten a number of times. and the ultraworld is made up of than 40-60 yr olds. i would challenge some of the hot shoes to giv e a spin. i have run all of the majors and the vets always get a chuckle out of the 240 marathon folks who talk alot before the race and drop out at 35 miles.
study the history of ultra running and check out the action in europe. take a look at the times at comrades, london-brighton etc.
most people join the ultra big crowds and over grown ran ks of the 10k-marathon races. most will also tell you they admire the efforts of \"karno\" and respect his talent, and he has plenty of that, his self hype is the reason they moved to the ultra world.
Considering Dean Karnazes would be lapped in the mile and beaten by nearly an hour in a marathon by by Paula Radcliffe, it strains the bounds of credibility to laud his "accomplishments" as anything remotely resembling elite runner status.
However, he is such a shameless self-promoter, perhaps he should be the CEO of USATF. He might have better lucl than the current stiffs who run that publicity-deprived debacle.
please define an elite runner. it would depend on the event age etc.
anne trason ran the olympic trials in the late 80's and was one of the greatest women/men athletics people never heard of. seldom lost a race over 50 miles and many times beating the men on trails or the road. was she an elite runner? you bet!
